MX5400. What brush cutter size? 60" or 72"?

What's the tread width at that setting? On my L4701 it's 70" from outside of tread on the second widest setting -- I had them set it there as it seemed the widest setting (another 4.5" wider) would put the tread wider than 72".
Mine is exactly 72”

Interesting. I can't find the MX5400/6000 manual online, but did find the 4800/5200. I'll assume the 5400/6000 is similar.

The 4701 R4 rims can be set to 49.2in, 53.5in, 54.7in, and 59.1in from center of tread to center of tread. The 5200 can be set to 51.6in, 55.9in, 58.1in, and 61.2in. So wider footprint overall.

The tread width of a 17.5L-24 R4 is around 16", so I would think the tread footprint of the MX could extend up to 77" or so at the widest setting, meaning a 72" implement wouldn't cover its tracks.

I think mine is set at the widest point. I asked the dealer to do that and he said he did. I need to go look again. I did measure the width and it’s exactly 72”. It’s pretty stable so even if it’s not at its widest setting I’m happy with the current configuration.

Yes - wider is better. Unless you have some narrow places to go thru. I had mine set at 80" - outside to outside. There is one wider setting - probably around 84" - outside to outside.

But with half of the rear tires already outside the fenders - I sling plenty of mud lumps when I'm in the soup.

I have the Land Pride RCR 2660 rotary cutter with a 60" cutting width. I ordered it with my previous L3301. Definitely should go with the 72" cut RCR2672.

For reference I went with a woods 72.50. It was either that or an rc cutter that I’m afraid I’d tear up in the woods around my property. Would have rather gotten a 72.30 as the .50 is a bit heavy for my tractor, but the .30 wasn’t available.

Apologies for the hijack, but looking to replace my old BB 72, was hoping to find a dual tail wheel rotary cutter with a galvanized or at least powder coated deck. Interested in the new Land Pride, but paint or powder coat? Is it built as well as the Woods? No one seems to powder coat or at least talk about it in their ads, and Modern seems to be the only company offering galvanized models.
My r/c biggest enemy’s are rust from neglect & abuse from cutting sloped ditches & levees hence the unusual “wants”.

IMO, powder coating is isnt all its cracked up to be. Especially in the norther states with road salts.

Too many companies skimp on prep work and if you have one tiny spot poorly prepped or dinged....moisture gets in and it peels off in sheets.

Powder coating is cheaper and less messy. Thats why its done. Not because its better.

And I do believe modern is the only company that does galvanized. With regard to dual wheel....I think thats pretty uncommon on a 6' cutter. I dont currently know any MFG that offer it.

With regard to woods vs landpride and which is better.....they are both good "companies". But they both offer SEVERAL different 6' models. Trying to compare a lighter woods to a heavier landpride or vice versa is a fools errand. They both make good comparable cutters in their respective weight classes

Trying to decide between a 60" or 72" brush cutter.

Tractor: MX5400 4x4 w/ loader

Cutter Brand: Woods (what my trusted dealer carriers)

Intended cutter use:
  • Cutting grass around a pond and along a dam bank which has an incline
  • Clearing brush in lightly wooded areas (looking at 3" cutting capacity)
A larger cutter would allow my to cut around the pond more quickly but I'm worried it would get in the way when maneuvering in the woods, might impact my tractor's PTO ability to clear saplings, and/or could cause more of a tip hazard when cutting the dam. My neighbor has a 60" and he loves it, but mx5200 is 2wd and doesn't have a loader so it's not a 1:1 comparison.

Update

After talking to my local dealers and what they have in stock, here are the models I'm considering:

- Titan 1606
- Woods BB72.50
I have the LandPride RCF-2072 (on an MX5400). Just right. I don't use it too often in the woods, but sometimes I do. However when it comes to the woods it isn't the width that is the problem for maneuvering (at least for me), it's the length. The cutter must extend at least a full 9 feet back from the 3PH, that makes turning around in the forest quite tricky. For field work, it's perfect. Slightly wider than the tractor. I wouldn't want something where the tractor was wider than the cutter.

In my case, I only cut the field once a year, and it is full of saplings when do it. I wouldn't go wider than 72" for my application, those saplings are dense and I have to go slow to make sure I do a good job chopping them up.
