I couldn't tell on the NH but I believe it to be a mechanical shuttle shift, likely a three range four speed transmission.
The one you want is that red Magnum full 18 speed power shift with two or four reverse gears.
Supposedly you don't need to use the clutch at all if you don't want to.
We do use it, reach up grab the shifter pull it out of park and select a desired gear (between 1st and 12th, we stop at 12th to be easier on the clutch, release the clutch and go if you want a higher gear just push the shift lever up to it, it doesn't care if it's one gear or 3-4 it will shift right up and go, the same if the present gear is to high just start pulling the shifter down gears till you get the one you want.
In my mind they are one of the nicest tractors to run and work, when you realize that series started in 1987 and they are still a highly desirably tractor today with the 8.3 Cummins and full power shift transmission.
Is it as this YouTube demonstrates?

50F and mostly cloudy @ 15:30, but alternating between sun and clouds.

Hopper and two sunflower tube feeders refilled yesterday, also deer feeder. Plugged in the electric fence again while I was out there.

More work done down in the fish room ... still a ways to go but looking somewhat better.

Prepped the Black-eyed Susan seeds I collected and stuck them in the refrigerator to cold-stratify.

Got the 3 Caladium bulbs The Woman picked up planted in one of the square pots for the aquarium stand planter. Still have to find some suitable pots for the 3 elephant ears, as those will get pretty large.

Finished up and placed another large plant order last night: 6 more day lilies, 2 toad lilies, a brunnera, another hosta collection (6 different types), an Orienpet Lily collection (9 total, of 3 different types ... these are a little shorter than the ones I originally bought), a bag of 30 (mixed) gladiolus bulbs, 12 asparagus plants, 3 rhubarb plants, and 2 blueberry plants (one early, one mid-summer ... to go with the 1 early and 1 mid we still have surviving)

Surprisingly, I got an email this morning that all the flower items have already shipped ... which I was definitely not expecting ...

Need to start thinking about permanent fence posts for around the (expanded) garden area.

Glad to hear folks surgeries went well.

Mentioned the cataracts to The Woman ... and she informed me that She has a cataract forming in one eye as well.

Ummm ... well thanks for that update ... glad I mentioned it ...

Hope everyone is having a great day ... (y)

Looks like it, seems that many of those have just an 8 speed transmission, a hi lo bow and then a 4 speed trans.

What he doesn't mention in his video is using the brakes to stop before using the shuttle to change directions,
if not you are using the clutch face to stop movement and change direction, easy way to use up clutch disc's fast.

Also I'm used to hills and parking on non level areas, if my transmission doesn't have a dedicated Park position on a geared tractor,
I always leave it in gear and the lowest forward or reverse gear and range possible, on his example if facing down hill the shuttle would be in reverse, the range in Lo and the transmission in first with the clutch released and also the parking brake applied. I do not trust parking brakes I have seen them jump free from the latched position when they get some hours and wear on them.

My previous tractor, a Deere 4520, had a "Power Reverser" transmission, which did not require clutching either.
I always did (in fact, I stopped any movement) since I figured just reversing would be tough on the tractor. Even though not required, I always used the clutch when moving the reverser lever...
I always liked reverser transmissions...more so then hydrostatic and definitely more then the older gear transmissions. If I could have gotten a reverser with my 4052 cab; I'd have gotten one. With me, the cab was the priority and cabbed Deeres don't offer anything but hydro transmissions

Yes the Power Reversers and Power Shuttles don't require or need clutch operation to work, and they will work to change direction without stopping but I always stop with the brakes and then change direction.
I have no desire to have to rebuild the clutch packs in the Power Reverser or Power Shuttle.
Many of those do not have a dry clutch either and the clutch pedal is just a modulating actuator for the clutch pack.
