I have a Ford/Newholland 1215 compact tractor that has a serious whine when raising the 3 point lift. It does raise so I know the pump is working and did notice the fluid reservoir was very low. My question is, could I have damaged the lift or pump running the pump with low fluid and if I drain that hydraulic fluid, replace the hydraulic filter and replace the hydraulic fluid would that potentially solve the whining from the lift? or will this be an exercise in futility? Also, is there a better hydraulic fluid to use in this system?

Only when it reaches the top (highest lift point). It does not shudder or vibrate, just lifts slowly and whines at max lift. This is a gear and clutch tractor for the transmission, only has hydraulics for 3 point lift.

Yes, running the system low can damage it but it doesn't sound like you did damage.
Replace the filter and also look to see if it has a cleanable filter. They usually did in that era and it can be hard to find. Check an operator's manual to see if you have one.
It's the first thing to do when an older tractor starts to show hydraulic problems.
Second thing is to change the hydraulic fluid. Use any good trans/hydraulic fluid. Good fluid isn't cheap. JD sells one called HyGard. There are many others.
Do fluid and both filters and then lets see if that changes things before adjusting anything.

I have had good luck with synthetic hydro oil. I think it works better in cold weather.
Different issue, but I had a NH hydro drive that was much less whiney after changing to synthetic.
Nobody likes a whiner.

I will locate a new hydraulic filter and new hydraulic fluid. I suspect I better check the fittings and hoses to ensure I do not have any minor leaks (I have not noticed any on my parking pad concrete) before adding the new hydraulic fluid. I appreciate all the good feedback. Still learning a thing or two with tractor systems so I will add this to my notes. Thanks. I will let you know if I have silenced the whiner.
