It's 2022; why don't they have starters and clutches in Sprint cars yet?

I really enjoy the local races; the 360's and 410's are fun to watch.

But, a buddy of mine calls them "Spurt cars"... Get em on the track, then go push start them all, then do it again every time they stop... Most other race cars have clutches, batteries, starters. It's not like there isn't clutches, starters etc to handle the compression/HP etc.

Weight is the biggest thing. The best way to take off a pound is to shave a few ounces here and a few there, but they can lose a lot with no starter or alternator.

Direct drive with no transmission.

I used to live about a mile from Husets. 'Watched' for free a few times driving along Hwy 11.

I don't know much about it, but I know the missing parts are all about weight.

I'd rather spend an evening at the dirt track roundy rounds than high bank any day.

Weight and simplicity. No need for a trans, run in direct drive. No need for a clutch if you dont shift. No need for a starter if you cant disengage and reengauge the motor once running.

Midgets are the same way.

Sprint cars are loaded with old technology. Mechanical fuel injection. Solid axles. Torsion bars.

…and given that archaic technology, there are few race cars on a roundly round track that can match a properly set up sprint car for acceleration and handling. With 900 HP and 1400# weight it’s a rocket.

I took my "fast car" to my 1st SCCA Autocross Solo this last weekend, that was a freaking hoot. I'm addicted as I gave up road riding m/c last year due to heavy influx of covid refugees from the liberal coasts.

Placerville Speedway is kind of both. Bull ring style, with substantial banking.

Pretty lucky, as we have a bunch of local tracks. Surprising considering California. Within an hour:
Placerville Speedway - 1/4 mile dirt
All American Roseville - 3/8 mile paved
Sacramento Raceway - 1/4 mile drag and a motocross track
Fast Fridays Auburn - 1/8 mile Speedway Motorcycle
Marysville Raceway - 1/4 mile dirt
Prairie City OHV - Home of the Hangtown National Motocross

I think that's it; old technology.

But it's 2022; a little technology would speed up starting, restarting.

Also a little farther away but still in central CA:

Lodi Cycle Bowl dirt track, training ground for multiple national and world motorcycle dirt track and road racing champs.
Carnegie Cycle Park, national MX and hillclimb races.
Donner Ski ranch, national and world observed trials competitions and also extreme enduros.

I've ridden the latter two but only in local level competitions.

When would you have time to go get some popcorn?
So it's all Orville Redenbacher's fault? Got to make the sweet sweet concession money.

Another fine Purdue grad! 😛

Redenbacher was born in Brazil, Indiana, on July 16, 1907, to William Joseph Redenbacher (1872–1939), a farmer, and Julia Magdalena Dierdorff (1874–1944).[1] He grew up on his family's farm where he sometimes sold popcorn from the back of his car. He graduated from Northview High School (Brazil, Indiana) in 1924 in the top 5% of his class. He attended Purdue University, where he joined the agriculture-oriented Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, marched tuba in the Purdue All-American Marching Band,[3] joined the Purdue University track team,[4] and worked at The Purdue Exponent. He graduated in 1928 with a degree in agronomy.[5] He spent most of his life in the agriculture industry, serving as a Vigo County Farm Bureau extension agent in Terre Haute, Indiana, and at Princeton Farms in Princeton, Indiana.[6]
