Would You Loan It Out?

He can afford a new tractor...
He can afford to buy his own implements...

I agree with the idea that he is more than willing to put to large of a tiller on that size of Branson.

Also that if something goes wrong, and he does hurt the tractor, sounds like the kind of person that will attempt to externalize blame and all of the repair expenses as well.

With a slip clutch and being a larger tiller than the tractor is rated for I think the tiller is safe, other than maybe cosmetically.

There are a few people that I would loan stuff to but not many. Your tilling price is to high. What’s he want, you to pay him next time.

It is good to be a good guy, I do dumb stuff for people fairly frequently.
I don't loan stuff if I can't afford to fix the worst they could do to it.
I don't loan stuff where the odds of the borrower hurting them selves is over 20%.
I hate ungrateful people, I would not have chased my 50 bucks, but, when he said my prices were high, I probably would have asked him to leave (or beat him to death if it was a bad day).

Best,

Well since everyone is taking the expected stance of HELL NO, I guess I will be positive and say, don't worry about it.

He's running the tiller slowly, because he has to. This won't hurt your tiller. Why worry about running it through grassy soil? It's made to do that. His weak little tractor won't hurt it unless he has some severe operator error.

But! Come up with a reason you need to till something and go get it back ASAP.
I'll agree with this!

Not going to hurt the tiller by running the engine at reduced output. Those gears are taking the same beating they would at any rpm. Time is time!

But you would not have posted if the entire affair wasn't scratching at your craw. Get your tiller back, and don't loan it out again.

I had a "friend" wanting to borrow my tractor, I shuffled him off with a hand rake.... I'm NOT going to be the one to be sorry for another man's errors.

I don't generally loan my equipment out.

I have had bad experiences in past where things get lost or damaged. The worst time was when my wife gave the tractor keys to a tenant (to do some yardwork, help us out a bit - she had claimed to have 30 yrs of farming experience), and
that tenant on two separate occasions within 5 weeks, flipped the tractor on it's side - complete inexperience and stupidity. NEVER AGAIN, cost me an insurance claim that settled at $11,900.00 (deductible was cheap thankfully). Basically, I got a brand new tractor.

I will however lend the tractor on infrequent occasions to 2-3 specific friends with (lots of $$$) and far more experience than me ... one is my tractor mechanic. Does my maintenance servicing, and is financially responsible for any issues. The others have lots of tractor experience and are also very careful and financially responsible for it - they sign rental contacts with me. For these few people, I arrange this as they help me out in many other ways, and this is how I can give back.

Other than that, the tractor does not leave the yard.

So let's see... Post count is 48 NO and 0 Yes  I think i am seeing a pattern here. Your description of last year when he wouldn't even give you the whopping $50 said it all. No. Nothing. Never. Not even your exhaled CO2.
