I get ridges along the direction of travel as the skid running in the tilled soil lets that side drop in deeper than the skid on the untilled side. Could possibly eliminate the ridging by raising the skids out of engagement and letting the position control hold the cutting depth but wondering about a different method as position control doesn't seem to be very precise.

So, has anyone tried using the side tilt to "hold up" the skid running in the tilled soil? Then, when running in the opposite direction the tilt cylinder would need to be adjusted slightly in the opposite direction to hold the other side up. There is just enough slack between the right and left sides of the 3PH to allow the ridging to occur.

Edit: Note the ridge also in the last pass made at a right angle in the foreground. This was to clean up the "ups and downs" of all previous passes. The large ridge to the "inside" of the pass is where the right side runner was in tilled ground.

The tail flap on the back of the tiller should knock down those ridges , I have a 5 and 6 ft tiller neither makes ridges , I adjust it so it rides level and do not touch it once i start.

Before I got my side link, I removed the skid on the untilled side to make it level. Finally, got rid of the tiller since my PTO would "skip" once and a while and I didn't want to buy the locking CAMS to fix the problem. (I now have the locking cams in a box waiting to be replaced).

I was thinking that also but the tailboard on my tiller doesn't reach out far enough. This pic shows the tiller operating with both skids running on untilled.

Interesting! I may have to try removing the skid on both sides as I till back and forth (reversing direction) on large patches. Would be interesting to see if the adjustable stop on the 3PH position control would be precise enough to hold the depth on the tiller.

Tilt cylinder works well for such issues on a tiller. Handy for lots of other uses also.

Good to know. I thought that the idea of using the tilt for tilling (TFT? :)) might get me self flamed.

I till mine both directions. Meaning after your first picture you added I would then rotate 90 degrees and do the whole garden again. It typically results in a relatively smooth and ridge free look. It also gets deeper on the 2nd pass.
