I would never buy something big with cash. The risk of having the cops steal it from you is too great.

I'm glad I read this thread as I didn't realize that it was a crime to have a large sum of money to purchase an item, I just purchased a new skidsteer out of state a couple of weeks ago and the dealer said it was no problem to write a personal check.

It isn't. But read up on Civil Asset Forfeiture and how many departments essentially fund their entire annual budget by mis-applying it.

I don't think it's a crime to pay with cash. I think it's then just a he said she said as to whether an item is paid for when using cash. If you write them a check then you have proof they were paid.
