Algae & Microbal growth in diesel

Same price (and I presume the same ingredients) as Bio Kleen. I will say the stuff don't have a pleasant odor.

Don't really understand if your using filters
how does this stuff get past the filters???
Using fram filters??
I have always treated my fuel never had a
filter plug up so far

Least you can buy biocide, can't get it in Nova Scotia. I don't use my tractor a heck of a lot and it sits so I wanted to be preemptive for diesel bugs, can't get it anywhere. I make sure I keep the tank full is my only solution.....Mike

Check marine stores/commercial fishing supplies/or walk the docks & talk to the commercial guys (may cost you at the bar ... but you'll get some good stories). No one operates diesels on the ocean without some sort of biocide given how the tank vents are plumbed (open 5/8 lines to an outboard clamshell)/the quality of dockside fuel available (old underground tanks in salty/brackish groundwater)/amounts of fuel loaded, and the consequences & cost of being stranded with plugged filters out 100 miles from shore. I guarantee that you'll find a port supply store that can fix you up.

Never thought of a marine store, I'll give them a go, thanks..........Mike

I think the issue is the filters sill clog with the stuff quick. It also dosnt get any better if you wait. If the issue starts in your storage tank it runs through every piece of diesel equipment.

so....in a fuel system (w/o storage tank & treated containers used somewhat frequently plus keeping tractor fuel tank mostly full), can one make the assumption that without the presence of water in the system, algae & microbal growth will generally not occur? again no prior problem, but have followed some of these horror stories with interest.
thanks for all above responses

I look at it like filtration (or insurance). CAN I run a tractor (or any other diesel) w/o fuel filters? Sure, assuming clean tank/clean fuel/no possibility of water/condensation/rust/dust/or any other contamination getting in between oil refinery and my injector or fuel pump. Would I do it? Hell no, downsides outweigh the costs of prevention. I might be able to control some of the variables, but not ALL of them. Biocide is relatively cheap/a little goes a long way, and like water separators & filters, it gives me piece of mind. Yeah, water is necessary for algae/yeast/ etc. to grow. Won't happen in pure diesel oil (maybe someone with more biodiesel/farming/moonshining experience can speak to vegetable oil critters), but I never KNOW how pure I'm getting until after the fact. All I can do is assume based on prior experience. I might feel different if I operate in the Sahara, but I run in high humidity areas & don't know the status of tanks at the gas station, or whether biodiesel (or moisture absorbing ethanol gas) accidently got mixed in by an inattentive tanker driver, or how often they stick the tanks & if they do, how they remediate if they find water. Too many variables to take chances (in my opinion).

In theory yes..but you can still get it from your fuel supplier. 5gal can kept out of the weather and in the shade have a prety low likelyhood of growing things.

Large steel tanks out in the weather tend to grow more. This is where my tank is but its had the same fuel in it for 2.5yrs with out issues. I pull about 5-10gal out a month so it will last me roughly 5yrs+

good points, reason i posted the thread, much rather prevent than cure in this case. i will assume (in recommended doses), an algicide will be compatible w/Optilube. curious why most fuel treatments don't include an algicide with their regular "all season" mix. thanks again, this is an easy subject to overlook
