I need more towing capacity and there is one of these for sale down the road from me. 2008 f350 dually with the v10. I think it said heavy duty or super duty on it. Need to tow a 14k trailer. It's not an engine or truck I know much about. 71,000 miles and 21k$ owner said it was mainly used for towing a camper.

What do yall think?

I know the markets is crazy right now, but for $21k... no thanks.
Where are you located at?

I have never owned one, but I think the V10 was a decent engine, and paired with the auto of that generation, it should be good truck. I test drove an older one with the four speed and I think that was the only weak point besides abysmal fuel mileage.

The market is crazy and HD trucks are hard to find in good shape at reasonable prices. $21K may not be a bad price depending on options and condition.

Can't speak to the price...I think all rigs are overpriced these days. I can speak to the V10 motor - I have one in my 2007 E350. Very solid motor, excellent reputation for reliability. Many, many of these motors in heavy duty applications - I think that engine is still used in the latest motor homes - and they easily last 200,000+ miles. Makes good power but at higher rpms, just like all Ford engines of that era. Fuel mileage not so good - my overall average over the past 70,000+ miles is 11.8. But then it is a heavy rig - 8300 lb empty so a lot of weight to move.

I had one and it towed like **** compared to my '04 6.0 diesel. Just did not have any balls to move the truck let alone my 7k trailer. I know diesels are stupidly priced right now but if you don't plan on selling any time soon it might be worth the investment.

Yeah I agree... I was browsing around the VA area and not a whole lot out there for 21k.
Might be worth it if its clean and passes an inspection

What was your rear end gearing? I have no power problems with 4.56 gears in mine.

And then, no gas engine can compare to towing with a diesel. Why I own one of those too!

Did it see the beach much? Be careful of salt water damage, I had to replace brake lines because they rotted out.

I think they were the 3.73 gears. Which would explain the difference. My diesel also had the upgraded transmission.

Have the spark plugs been serviced or are they the original plugs still in there for 14 years at 71k miles?

Good question, I do remember them having issues with removing spark plugs.
If they break when removing them it can be a pain to finish removing them (or $$$ if it's at a shop)

^This. Ford transitioned away from the oddball sparkplugs in 2009. And it depends on whether the rig has the 3-valve or 2-valve engine. My 2007 E350 has the 2-valve and those never had the oddball plugs in them. Only the 3-valve engines got them. There are several YouTube videos out there on how to remove the oddball plugs; here's an article explaining them:AGCO Automotive Repair Service - Baton Rouge, LA - Detailed Auto Topics - Ford Spark Plug Breakage

For that year, I'd take that gas motor over the same year diesel option, every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And I'm a diesel fan...
The V10 is a respectable motor, with adequate power to tow without the high maintenance cost of a diesel. You pay for it in fuel, expect single digit fuel mileage. I've been around the Superduty trucks for 15+ years, owning many, the '05- newer are smoother riding than the older leafsprung 4x4 models.
For the $21k price tag, I'd expect an XLT trim level with power windows and cloth seats... if manual windows/locks, vynal seats, that's steep, unless totally rust free and spotless otherwise.
If you like it, that's all that matters.

Gasoline engines have little low-down torque. For towing, you need that and not high-rev horsepower, and even smaller Diesels are better in that respect. When Mercedes owned Chrysler their 3 litre Diesel's performance in the Chrysler pick-ups was way better than the 4.7 V8 and only slightly less than the 5.6 litre V8, with 30-35% better mileage.

SOLID truck...selling my 2009 is one of my biggest regrets, that truck will pull anything a powerstroke can and do so with out all the emissions problems. BUY IT

Thanks for all the knowledge and advice. I'm going to test drive, climb under and look around this weekend and see how it does.

Been a busy end of the week. Had 4 long road bores and a driveway.
