No. Our new hire pilots have either a HS diploma, or some college, plus their commercial ratings. I myself, have a HS diploma. I completed all of my aviation schooling at home studying, or renting an aircraft to learn maneuvers for my flight tests. No “formal” training. I’ll be at $275/hr in two weeks.
Our new hire pilots have no jet time, very little PIC time, no previous experience outside of limited flight instruction and total time of 1000 hours. They will start at $90/hr.
My son is 13 and has his heart set on being a pilot. He will complete his ratings in the course of two years, and can walk into what is now a $100k starting salary. His training costs as of today are $46k, which I have already set aside for him.
People going to college for 4 years to earn $60k are being gamed. I mean, really. They are borrowing to get a degree that barely lifts them above the average wage in America. I thought they were the educated ones?
I myself always wanted to be a pilot… but I thought it was out of reach. After 7 years as a programmer for a tool and die mfg… I trained a new hire who was working on his commercial ratings, and that got me on the right path. I’ve never looked back. I’m 45 now, and spent 20 years in this industry, and it has changed a lot. I started out earning $19k per year, with double the experience our current new hires have, and they will be right near $100k year one. It’s been a wild ride
