Self driving cars will get their drivers killed

Yeah, good luck with enforcement with that! Most, if not all states have laws barring cellphone operation by the driver too. How's that working out?
Most states also have laws making it illegal to speed up while somebody is trying to pass you... how is THAT one working out?
My sister's ex BF killed an oncoming driver and lost his legs because he didn't want to let someone by. I wonder how he feels about that now.

Do the satellites have the map info, or do they just link to servers on the ground? I suspect the latter.
I would hope that self-driving vehicles don't depend on an active link to the mothership to operate, but instead store the info they need in the vehicle, and update as necessary. Otherwise how would it handle driving in tunnels, down roads where the tree canopy blocks the sky, etc?
Not sure but suspect require active link for construction updates, detours, etc. it also stated that multiple links where required to know vehicle position, speed etc.

My 1 y.o. car has "self driving" features in it. My first car with any of that. The dealer said it is essentially the same as what Tesla calls autopilot (which is overstating it more than a bit, as I came to find out). It does 3 main things when you go into Full Assist mode.

1. Adaptive cruise. It allows you to adjust the number of car lengths to the car ahead of you within limits and it will maintain the speed until that distance is hit at which point it reduces speed to hold the distance. When the car in front is no longer there, it goes up to the set speed again. In Full Assist mode it can even come to a complete stop and then start going again when traffic backs up and restarts.
2. Lane keeping. It takes over the steering to a degree and holds the lane. You can let go of the steering wheel for only a few seconds before it yells at you and then disengages the auto assist if you don't grab it again. You can always manually override the auto steering just by pushing the wheel a bit harder where you want it to go.
3. Lane changing. It can maintain control of the vehicle and change a lane, but you have to tell it to do it. Say the cruise has slowed you down for another vehicle in front of you but the next lane is wide open. If it is clear, you flick the turn signal, and the car will move over and then resume the cruise speed. And if it does not like what it sees, it won't do it. If there is a car in the blind spot, for example, it won't move. The turn signal initiates the request to the system.

My daily commute is some country road and then 15 mi of freeway and I basically never use it on that as it is short and I like driving it (sport sedan). But on long road trips, it is very nice to have it take some of the mental load off of driving. You can't go to sleep or anything as once in a while it will kick off as something doesn't look right (bad lines or something) so you must remain aware, but it is nice to be able to open a bottle of pop without worrying about keeping in your lane, for example. And if you hit stop and go traffic, it is awesome! (Looking at you, Chicago)

A lot of these features are still running in the background too even if you don't have the Full Assist running. The lane keeping is kind of always on (unless you switch it off) so if you start to wander it will nudge you back in, but you can manually overcome it again. The emergency braking is also a great thing. I have never had it actually brake on me, but there have been a couple times where traffic suddenly slowed or stopped and I had glanced away for a sec. But it flashes this big red warning that you can't miss on the display which snaps you back to attention right quick and allowed plenty of time to slow down myself before it would kick in the auto stopping.

Overall I think it is a great thing to have, but given what I have seen from using it, the likelihood of full auto driving in the real world seems waaaaay far off, if it ever occurs. Simple example: winter with any snow or ice on the road - forget it, it won't work in full auto. There is just an infinite number of situations and variables to have to deal with, like the snow example. You would need some true AI that works like a human brain or better to make this happen.

I think the self driving cars rely on the cameras to keep in the lane. To get very precise navigation with gps, you need a fairly clear sky and 5 satellites but just to get a rough navigational location you can get by with worse conditions. I don’t think the self driving cars are using precise gps to keep in the lane like precision gps on tractors is.

The Real Fun has not even started yet. I participated in some Self-driving submissions a year ago in Ann Arbor. I sat in the passenger seat. NOBODY in the 'driver' seat Just a few I can remember:

When we passed a loaded semi-truck, the AI kept our car exactly in the center of the passing lane. This is a bit freaky for reasons you should try to imagine. I would have preferred a lot more space between us.

The AI is very concerned about stopping distance, so, it will slow down to create some. This will become a game out on the hiways, just start slowing down, the entire daisy chain of AI cars will almost come to a complete stop. Just block the passing lane and cycle your speed + - 5 mph. It scares them so they back off.

I found myself still wanting to accelerate and stop with my feet. It's sometime disappointing because the AI is more cautious, so late throttle and early brake.
Pretty cool once your blood pressure and heart rate go down.

I see some of that with the adaptive cruise control and lane drift warnings in my cars.

I always hug the shoulder when near a semi, but the car chirps at me.

Adaptive cruise would rarely allow passing on a busy highway because the gap (even at shortest setting) allows people to pass on the right. The car would then back off and let more in. Fortunately, it is just a helper. I ignore the suggestions most of the time. I like the emergency braking feature, though.

Another problem is if you go back to an older car, you may have to active remember to drive correctly. In the future, people will be unable to drive without the tech. Smh

I always cut out some comic strips I find to be particularly humorous. Ironically enough, in yesterdays comics...

If a car is self driving does it have a driver? Who really gets killed - the supposed driver, the passenger, a pedestrian, or an unsuspecting motorist in another car? Was the car in the original post self driving or did it just have an inattentive looky loo for a driver?
Good video here

Tesla shuts off the "autopilot" system 1/10 of a second before a crash so the lawyers can blame the "driver" behind the wheel.

1 - I don't believe that line of reasoning would hold up

2 - If a driver uses AI to "drive" the car, at the end of the day, isn't it still the responsibility of the driver to control their vehicle anyway? Kind of like suing a car manufacturer for making a car that drives too fast and you got busted for speeding IMO.

Simple solution - Make it illegal to operate a motor vehicle on a PUBLIC roadway using AI. OF course people will not follow this law, but if an accident occurs, no legal course for the driver to blame the manufacturer.

I still remember this one a couple of years ago that made the local news. Guy has a medical degree and is watching TV in his car at night driving?
