I’m guessing you always take the stairs and avoid buildings over 3 stories?

My mother did. She was claustrophobic. Wouldn't step foot in an elevator.

Try explaining that to a little kid (me) as she drags you up 6 flights of stairs. About the 3rd floor is when it probably got pretty irritating.

I usually take the stairs, i don't like being in the elevator with a bunch of people. Speaking of elevators, one day at work, i was down the hall a bit and saw the elevator door starting to close, so i took off running, jumped and just made the door. Not a good idea, that kinda freaks some people out, especially if they are kind of freaked out about elevators to begin with.

I usually take the stairs. It's much better exercise, and often as fast or faster than waiting on an elevator.

My employer has one at the office but aside from the janitor, who has all of her cleaning supplies I have only seen one person using it.
I have been known to put items in it at the basement level where we enter, then walk up to the 2nd floor and call the elevator. It saves going up and down stairs several times.

My wife (before covid) works downtown and parks in a parking garage. They'll only take the elevator in groups, never by themselves. Lot of homeless and shady folks. There's been a few incidents. So, they take the stairs if alone. Sometimes she'll skip the stairs and walk the ramps if there's someone in the stair lobbies that she doesn't recognize.

Reminded me of the time an inline skater was racing down the ramps in that parking garage, missed a turn, flew over the curb, slammed into the closed elevator doors, blew through them, and fell to the bottom of the shaft!

How could the doors open? elevator doors have a manual interlock that prevents them from opening if cab is not there.

Yeah, you'd think so. However, he wasn't opening them side to side. His body slammed into them with such force that the bottoms of the doors popped IN, not sideways, and he flew under them into the open shaft. Trying to find the news story on it with little success. Can't remember if he lived or not.

Yeah, I asked my wife about it. She thinks it was a skateboarder. There's the typical long ramps in the parking levels, but there's a really steep ramp between each level. This one is down to your left, with elevator to the right. If you lose your way, inertia throws you right at the doors. Kinda amazing a car has never jumped that curb and hit the doors. I cannot remember if he fell to the bottom, or landed on top of the elevator car. I cannot find any clips on it. I know it was in the paper and on local TV channels. Almost like it's been scrubbed. Conspiracy!

there was something about a guy on a motorized accessibility scooter falling 3 floors onto the top of the car. survived with minor scratches.
