I'm considering picking up a 3pt logging winch for my Kubota B2601 so I can reach off my logging trails and terrain not safe for my tractor, however sizing for it has been tricky. The tractor can supply 19.5 hp at the PTO so it looks like I could safely run:

Igland 2001 and 2501
Farmi W35R
Wallenstein FX40

Most are kind of hard to come by, but I see plenty on Craigslist/Facebook Market place that are a size up like the Krpan 3.5e, but they recommend 25hp minimum. I know I won't get the full power out of that winch with 19.5hp, but will it be similar to the other smaller winches? Or will using too big a winch give less performance than a smaller one (or flat out stall out the tractor trying to use it)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would guess you will get whatever "pull" 19.5 PTO hp can give. I really doubt you will loose much at all with a slightly larger winch. With a larger winch you will be putting less strain on the winch system.

I have had a Farmi 351P on an L2501 with 20HP at the PTO. It did fine. Totally depends on the terrain and how large of trees you winch. It's a short learning curve to find the limits of the HP at the PTO.

Either winch will work you have listed.

Merry Christmas!

On a small tractor the ground clearance of the winch is important, does the Igland has a hinged blade?

I have a Uniforest 35M. It looks very similar to the Krpan 3.5 and is of the same capacity. Uniforest lists it for tractors from 16-45hp. I usually run the engine of my 37hp Branson at 1200-1500 rpms when winching and it's never even noticed I am pulling a log. I think it would pull fine with a lot less hp.

What would concern me is B2601 is a lot lighter than my Branson (5000lbs with loader and loaded rear tires). Yes the winch butt plate digs in but tractor weight helps a lot too especially in loose soil or when pulling at an angle. With heavier logs you might end up pulling the tractor around. Whether that could be an issue depends on the size of the trees you have.

Hud-Son is the importer back east. Uniforest (and Krpan) make 3.0 models that are lighter and have a little less pulling force. I'd call them (or the Krpan importer or both) and ask what they recommend and what they have in stock.

Save some $$ for a self releasing snatch block. They're so useful.

I think the issue is going to be with such a small tractor is how much log can you really drag with to big of a winch hanging off the back.

A little off topic but does anyone use a PTO capstan for dragging wood... Reason is small tractor (CUT) and "small" need (don't need BIG winch)....

I would think that would work good be a good choice for the situation you describe. Here is on a fellow TBNer made

Good read but not much enlightenment, ended up more about use and rope then clues how to make....
