Trying to find some decent used Alcoas, too. Truck has really nice tires, but wheels look like junk

Looks like new best price is about $379. Only need 4.

So I have (as predicted) had a difficult time sourcing a 12’ used dump body locally. There’s FIFTY 10’ bodies for every ONE 12’ body.
10’ dumps are also about 1/2 to 2/3 as much in cost. I like that, too.

Thinking about sliding axle forward and buying a 10’ high sided dump body to keep the project moving. If I wait for a 12’ it might take forever.

Another factor is the tail ends of the frame are where the most rust damage is. So I can saw that crap off, too. I could possibly do an 11’ if they even exist, too.

Currently, the C/A is 108”. As much as it pains me to do so, I would shorten to 84” C/A.

Thoughts?

It's not that big a deal shortening the frame, lot of hole drilling is about all and of course the drivetrain. One thing you're going to have to watch for is the rust flaking off between the rails when you remove the rivets/bolts and preventing the rails bolting tight back together which will cause a lot of hole wear due to loose bolts. The air line fittings will probably be toast as well as any valving you have to move because of corrosion.

IIRC, 84” cab to axle is good for 10’ dump? I prefer axle more rear oriented than front.
Right now I have 144” of frame and 108” C/A.
Was thinking of going to 120” of frame and 84” C/A.

If you go with a 10' body and shorten the frame to an 84" CA, you still have the same overhang or is my mind going, which is a possibility.
You're going to have to watch what type of hoist tower you end up with. If you get one with a well inside the body you could crowd the cab a lot more. Makes it a sob to work on the cylinder tho.
Did you end up keeping the hydraulic tank behind the cab or going to go with a saddle tank....I forget, old age sucks :)

Got rid of the tank behind cab. Only thing left from old set up is the variable rate pump that was hooked to the engine on front bumper, but I removed it.
The rest was sold.
Overhand should be same as I am thinking of shortening C/A and frame both by 2 feet.
