Bear attack in AZ

Bear has ransacked the cabin several times and severed the propane tank line twice.

The only thing the city police said is do not hurt or harass the bear or I will be cited.
Update: The infamous "Hank the Tank" bear has been captured and will be relocated ...

Hank hit my place 4 times…

Took out propane twice and twice through the front door…

Law enforcement said whatever I do do not harass the bear or I will face legal consequences…

and yes the story of the 3 bears is true… bear slept on bed in both bedrooms…

Can’t make this stuff up.

Our neighbor in Northern CA was away for a significant time with medical issues. They had bear intrusions into their home and it was substantially wrecked.

What it is hard to fathom is why is the victim often the bad guy…

The Police explanation is we are in their habitat…???

I wonder if police would offer the same dismissal to Native Americans?

Every occurrence was within the 5k deductible so the suggestion to let insurance take care of it does not apply.

They say we have black bears - 40+ years and I've never seen any sign. Cougars - that's a whole different story. I've lost many barn cats to cougars. Hunters bagged a really big one - five miles west of my place. It's an area where several have been killed.

I DO NOT wander out and around my place after dark. That's one reason I'm still here after 40 years.

Too many people do not realize how powerful a medium sized black bear is. That's why so many tourists are lost to black bears in Alaska. The need to get a really close up picture with a tourist is not one of the bears priorities.

A guy I worked with lived in a remote Alaska settlement and he explained not leaving the house unarmed...

I said crime as the first thing popping into my head... he said no... Bears.

This discussion has me thinking since the Lake Tahoe police saying shooting a bear is a good way to get yourself killed or incarcerated... why does everyone in my friends part of Alaska carry handguns for bear if all it does is upset the 4 foot and 2 foot variety of bear???

The are not carrying rifles or hunting rifles... just handguns and I don't know the size.

I guess if I was preparing for a potential bear attack while going about normal 'life' (as opposed to hunting for bear), I would carry a handgun, too.

Not everyone is the Rifleman (tm) and can quickly and accurately fire from the hip. Not to mention, carrying the rifle takes away from the ability to do use your hands to work. You could sling the rifle, but the reaction time is not going to work in your favor.

If the people living the life are doing it a certain way, there is usually a reason (often born of tragedy or necessity).

That's Disney logic... wildlife doesn't say "This is my land, that is yours" Rather, they look for 3 things; food, water and a safe place to shelter . If they can get the first two without danger they can find the last.

I've had the opportunity to meet/greet black bears in Alaska two times. I lived in Alaska - 1960 thru 1982. Thank God I was carrying a 12 gauge and buck shot. Not some STINKING handgun. I had to put the bears DOWN - not irritate them.

Bears don't necessarily like handguns. But they will chew them up - along with the person holding it.

Folks who think they can put down a charging bear with a handgun are the same people who would go rhino hunting with a sling shot.

If you insist on going into bear country and carry a handgun for protection - just be sure you have your affairs in order before you go.
