It’s underappreciated how much the strength of the American economy vis a vis rest of world since 2008 is due to the shale gas revolution and resultant low power prices. It spurred the industrial & manufacturing renaissance and acted as a tax break for American consumers. Why do we want to totally do away with our competitive advantage to technology we don't have the raw materials for?

Old Mercedes Benz cars lasted a very long time, and still do to this day. Of course today a Mercedes needs more maintenance than an old 240D but here in Europe it is not that expensive to keep them on the road. A lot of used and remanufactured parts for all the German cars, I do see in the US the Knowledge of European cars are not that common and makes maintenance and repair expensive.

My 2016 diesel van has now a bit over 165000km or ca 100000 miles, so far it has needed brake pads and I have changed one ball joint at 150000km and a battery, and of course the timing belt/water pump.
Brothers 300D Mercedes has been bullet proof...

During the time of 9/11 they were flying to a family wedding at the farm from California to Illinois... planes grounded so they drove and had a wonderful trip with the newborn in tow...

Maybe Mercedes will achieve similar longevity with the battery models?

That's the reason everybody wants to get off the dependence on oil.

Oil is only good for those that can produce it.

We can produce it and we innovate to make sure we can maximize production at the lowest cost possible. This technology is then exported over the world to help others maximize at low costs.

The world benefits.

Well, maybe as EVs are simple machines, when the most important thing is the three year lease customer real quality is not that important, the quality that matters now is fit, finish and the quality experience of the dealer and the cars exterior and interior, that sells cars.

Hva been sitting in a VW Golf and a Toyota Corolla, almost the same price but the feel and look was two different worlds, I do believe the Golf has a much cheaper interior in the US, of course the long time quality of the Toyota is better but it didn't feel nice compared.

Electric power can be produced from many sources and in many places solar power can fuel cars, many poor countries have a shortage of dollars to purchase oil and fuels, much better to run EVs and use your foreign currencies on more important things.

unless you need to charge your EV at night..... Or how well does solar work during the winter in Northern Norway?

I believe we have the raw materials, we just refuse to take them out of the ground or ocean floor.
