SR, I wonder if your tractor wheels will like the wire baskets better.

I must have missed a good reason to not to put the forks directly under the tote. If "One of the biggest reasons is, having to close the pallet forks a bit to move them" is an issue, I would question the forks. Stacking totes farther apart does not make sense to me.

That's what I was wondering too ???

I have a makeshift 3pt fork system on my loader until I get the time to weld up a quick attach setup. I know that it is not easy to drive the forks under the very bottom of the totes plus it digs up the ground. His forks are too wide to fit in the available slots in the bottom of the totes. His forks/ grapple were purchased well before the totes, never having the intended purpose to use these totes. I'm sure he wants them typically set at the widest setting for stability on his main activity of picking up logs. So if it's a pain to adjust for the seldom used metal tote, then a solution to adapt was developed. He really likes his wood totes that carry more, are built to his specs, easily made due to him having a BSM. He also seems to have plenty of flat area to store these totes with the logs sticking out, so I see no downside to his solution. I also feel what works for the few, doesn't mean it has to be for the many. Same reason I hate Congress...

If the wood in the totes is green, staking them a bit further apart is a good idea. It helps improve air circulation

He stores them in an open field so space really doesn’t matter. Even if the forks slide freely which they never do having to get off and move them is annoying.

I don't think the baskets or boxes have that much to do with the wheels, they just aren't that heavy, but I bet having logs stick waaay out to the side does.

No problem, it's easy and fairly cheeeep to make them stronger.

Could you please show me a quote where I complained that it was too hard to move the forks in or out.

IF, you understood the part about drying splits, THEN it would make sense to you.

Gordon, I could put the totes 10 feet apart, and I'd still never run out of room.

I have a "drying area", where there's prevailing breeze, I want that breeze to work for me.

I said before how I HATE these metal baskets and have turned them down when offered to me. One of the biggest reasons is, having to close the pallet forks

I know you have plenty of room. I just wondered why it was easier for you to find and cut some fairly straight poles than narrow the forks. Not finding fault just wondering because I thought fork adjustments were dead easy. Plus with the forks under you lift the bottom of the pallet not the stack of wood which can move. Again I was just curious ???

First of all, straight poles are everywhere on my place, there's probably thousands of them and they only need to be 5' long to do the job. The ones shown, I cut within 50 yards of where the pict. was taken, and in one of the picts., you can see more of them standing in the pict., ready to use, all from the same tree.

I'm moving both wide and narrow things several times a day, why get off and walk around the tractor every time I move a basket when I don't have to?? Many times, I'm shuffling things around, moving boxes AND baskets, then other things like logs too, It's just so much easier to keep everything the same.

A basket full of wood, nothing moves, look at an above pict., the poles don't even move, plus moving the baskets are only part of why I hate baskets. With the poles, it's very easy to dump the basket right in front of my basements window, curing another thing I hate about baskets, unloading them! Another problem solved!

SR does things that work for how he does things. That is all the matters to him and others can decide if something is worth doing for their operations.

I would never put poles through a tote to lift it because I do not need to or want to. Does not work for me, but may work for others. So be it.

Sharing ideas Is good stuff.

My way works great for me, but it is not the only way to handle firewood. I value ease of effort and productivity very highly. If I need to invest a bit to reach my goals, I can justify It. Others may think I am a fool. I think people who buy $5000 log splitters are nuts, but it works for them.

One size does not fit all.

Where's the complaint that it's hard to do? You quoted a complaint that I have to keep getting off and back on the tractor to do it.

Do you have a garage door opener? Why not just get out of your car/truck and open the door yourself? Pretty much the same thing as having to climb off/on the tractor to deal with the forks again...

I changed the wording just to make Sawyer Rob happy.
