Don't forget the Automatic added 1k back in the 70's and today $8k to the sales price of most fullsize Pickups! So yeah, They want to sell Auto's!
Considering how the vast majority of pickups are sold in suburban areas, I'm not surprised that most people want an automatic - manuals suck in heavy traffic.

I just read:
Pay duty fees: According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, current rates are 2.5% of the purchase price for automobiles, free or 2.4% for motorcycles, and 25% for trucks. Take possession of your car: You must be present or hire a customs broker to sign for your car when it arrives.
So weird, 2.5% cars, 25% trucks!
Tijuana has two Toyota dealerships...just over the border! Maybe I'll try sneaking one in then write a book about it!

I tried chatting with them.
"¿Tienen camionetas Toyota IMV 0 nuevas a la venta?"
Their reply was so fast, so much information all I could say was ¡gracias! and go offline. My 1 year Spanish wasn't much help.

Actually if you know how to drive one, it's not that bad. I did it for years. You just pick low enough gear and let traffic speed up and down while you just move at a slower, more constant rate when traffic moves.

I didn't find it bad ether... it's only harder to drink a coffee and eat a muffin while doing it... but would still take a manual any day, then I could leave the key inside all day long.

I always found hills, signals, and people on your butt the main issue with a stick shift; well, and trying to shift, steer with a knee, clutch while holding a jumbo sweet tea in on hand, and a burger in the other, the main problems with a standard in town; of coarse that was before cell phones where in every vehicle...

^^^^^^
I use my cup holder, and don't eat when in traffic... or worry about the cell phone. The last is for my convenience, I'm not here to be it's servant.

Years ago I was at a stoplight on a steep hill when I noticed the backup lights come on, for the car in front of me... obviously they confused 1st with reverse. With nobody behind me I was able to roll my bike back a few car lengths. Sure enough when the light changed they let out the clutch and came flying down the hill at me. Luckily I had left enough room to take evasive maneuvers. :D

More vehicles we have are manual than automatic.

I bet. I’ve traveled to Mexico several times, but never dealt with the criminal element there. But chop shops in the US are selling parts in Mexico to dispose of stolen vehicles, or just taking stolen vehicles to Mexico where they disappear.
I went on a tour of the auto impound yards in Juarez a couple years ago with a group of auto theft investigators from several agencies and TxDPS. There were then 3 municipal operated impound yards and one operated by the state. I was working on a lot of auto theft cases and repatriated vehicle issues and coordinating the process improvements between the TxDPS, the TxDMV (then part of TxDOT) and the NICB on reported stolen vehicles.

During that tour we also met with the States Attorney for Chihuahua who handled auto theft prosecutions and was very involved in the repatriation process for impounded vehicles. We had several Mexican LE officials accompany us during the tour. At that time there was a very good working relationship between the MX authorities and the TxDPS and other agencies.

Off the topic a bit, but in 2019 I took a weeklong trip with a professional society to Chihuahua City. What a difference between that and Juarez. Chihuahua City is beautiful, safe, and very clean. The citizens there look prosperous and there are many high end stores, restaurants, and hotels. A big contrast to Juarez. Chihuahua City is full of manufacturing facilities for US companies. Some of the relatively new facilities I saw were: Ford Motors, Polaris, Trane, GE, and many more that I’ve forgotten. The Southern Pacific RR has a spur there to transport goods to the Santa Theresa, NM port of entry. Yes these were all formerly in the US and the jobs are now in Mexico. But, one benefit is that the people working there are making a decent living and not interested in crossing their northern border to look for work. And better to buy from Mexico than China.
