I 'think' it depends on how/when they die. It seems like a lot of the lightning kills have a lot of lighter, and I'm sure it depends on time of year, and sap content at t.o.d
I've never considered the effect lightning would have on that. Interesting possibility.

This was a fairly young tree with a diameter 3 feet from the ground of about 8".
I agree 'old growth' usually produces better 'lighter'.

I wonder if the stumps left from those 100yr old pines I cut down in my “Massive Storm Clean Up” thread will be a lot of lighter? They were essentially sheared-off at about 30’ high by 100+ MPH shear winds. Now there’s ~80 2’-4’ diameter stumps left.

Would be interesting to check them to see what % are. Especially since all cut about the same time

Took a few days off and have been after 5 arsonist's who have been trying to set the woods on fire, LOL, figured I better come home since we got some rain today and I have fertilizer supposed to be ready tomorrow for me to start getting out for winter rye, hope everyone has a good week.

If they were 100 year old trees you can bet that the heart will be fat lighter, there are 4' high stumps in the woods here at the farm that were cut in the 1940's that are still solid and nothing but fat lighter.

I have to ask because I don't know or can figure out -- what is "fat lighter"? I've never heard that term used before. Thanks

It's the heart wood or center of the pine tree from the stump to sometimes upwards of 25' to 30' up the tree, you can strike a match to a small sliver or piece of it and it will light right up and burn for 10 or so minutes good and hot, we use it to start fires with in our wood stoves or fireplaces, there is nothing better, I have heard yankees refer to it as magic wood.

Thanks Paul and Lineman, Now I have a clear idea of what everyone was talking about. I've never heard that term before or tried using anything like that. Maybe some day I will and now I know what to use for igniting a fire. Appreciate the knowledge. Greg

I have most of what was an old fat tree left. I've used some of it but for the most part it's all there. There's a company in our area that harvested the fat lighter for the manufacture of dynamite so alot of ours has been taken.
