I'm not sure what the question is. Yes, State universities. Tuition was considered for all institutions applied to. None were much better than the others.

My understanding too… but forgiven at death or retired by self or third party pay is the way it’s been.

A veterinarian... there are only 32 veterinary colleges in the US. None are inexpensive. I have a son in law that'll be graduating this spring. His wife, my daughter, has been accepted to 7-8 of them and will be attending one of them this spring as well. They have big loans. But they have included paying them off in their life plans. Mortgage, utilities, car, kids, student loans. They'll be fine.

I was just responding to your statement about government staying out of education. But state universities are run by state governments who appoint boards of regents. I just found the statement odd about no role for state government in state universities.

I find it curious that "State run" institutions are somehow acceptable. Handing education content, delivered to our future generations, to "the state", regardless of entity, is stifling. Unless cookie cutter results is the intent.

Yep. However, a lot of it depends on what kind of vet medicine you specialize in. Fortunately for both of them, there's a big shortage of veterinarians in private practice and industry right now. Job prospects are good.

I find it curious that "State run" institutions are somehow acceptable. Handing education content, delivered to our future generations, to "the state", regardless of entity, is stifling. Unless cookie cutter results is the intent.

If you’ve ever met many faculty, cookie cutter instruction is far from the outcome. They are all talented individuals with their own perspectives and experiences with the curriculum they teach. Boards of regents just approve the general programs of how many hours of what subjects are required for degrees and funding/infrastructure issues. I sit on an advisory board for a forestry program. We look at gaps in the subjects offered, not how they are taught.

I think you two are saying the same thing, maybe. College absolutely opened doors for me that were previously closed. Around my area, the school you got the degree from doesn't really play into selection. For the biggest part even the type of degree doesn't really matter, as long as it's from an accredited university. I chose the smallest college from the 3 that are available in my town. It's a private Baptist school. I really got a lot from the classes as they were small in size and the program I chose was geared for working adults. All the classes were at night, I worked my normal full time job, ran a lawn service with about 12 weekly yards, and took 12 hours per semester and graduated Summa *** Laude. Had I finished my degree as a kid straight out of high school I have no idea where I would be. I doubt I would be where I am now.

As to the loans... I started back to school married and able to pay my tuition out of pocket. But, ended up divorced mid-way through. I ended up having to take about $20,000 in loans. I got the minimum amount I could, to keep on track without getting too far in debt. For me it was a calculated investment that paid off. I don't agree that others should get saddled with my debt, but you can bet your tail I waited to see if the mass loan forgiveness was going to go through before I paid them off!

Absolutely not, it’s part institution and mostly liberal worthless profs…

Why is it appealing to borrow a bunch of money to go live at a snotty college, graduate, get a job with so much debt, that you’d make more going to a cheaper college, or just working and taking night time tech/computer classes? Might even get paid for by employer.

Many of them go because the ones they graduate HS with go. Others go for ''the experience'' LOL Expensive experience !

I had a friend that had a son that wanted to go to an instate school but too far away to drive, so he stayed on campus. I ask my friend if his son was going to get a job to pay for his extra expenses ,and since he had gotten student loans to go, he would have to borrow less money. My friend said ''no, with what he's taking, it will consume all his time, so no time for a pt job''..

Fast forward, I talk to him about how well his son is doing, he dropped his head and said he flunked out.. I ask how was that possible, since he had no job so he could focus only on his studies.? He looked rather embarrassed, but went on to tell me how he had gotten in some school club and ended up parting the entire time.
I ask him if he was going to take up his student loan payments ? he said no, those were on him. He has worked for several as restaurants as server/ waiter.

Last I talked to him, his son hadn't paid any of the loan back. and doesn't care to, he's the type the loan will go away when he dies

I would know the failure rate for those borrowing money vs those where parents have paid the cost for them to.

I will answer for my own case and most people in my profession, which is the same for many professions. Why spend money going to college instead of making more money with more lucrative jobs? Because we enjoy our chosen field of study and want to make it profession. Most of us work 40+ years in our careers and we want to spend those years doing something we find interesting and enjoy. Making the most money isn’t all there is to life.

That's the difference between a boring job where you HAVE to go to work but can't wait for the workday to end and and exciting job where you WANT to go to work and often stay extra unpaid hours because you want to.
I was lucky enough to find a position where my initial college training got me in the door but the job (and I) evolved to be far different.

Does your SIL have a really good job? Because being a vet isn't all that lucrative.

Some of these guys rail against something they have no actual experience with - college. Instead they speak in tropes, stereotypes and anecdotes from 3rd parties.

I have plenty of complaints about the cost of higher education (thank Reagan for that one. He taxed me on a tuition waiver. Money I didn't have to pay was considered income thanks to ole RR).

Personally, what my granddaughter is going to do as far as staying home and going to a local campus of a good state, College is in my mind, the preferential way to do it.

I applaud my granddaughter, for having her head set firmly on her shoulders in the right direction, going forward!

So your granddaughter is going to binge drink and drug party extra good because she won't have to pay room and board?
