what on earth does electricity cost near you?

That said, I did 8 outside burn piles this winter so far, but I also paid the $200 tax to our local smoke-authority to do it legally.

This winter, with the rise in power company prices, my incremental cost is now 55c off-peak, and 60c peak. (winter rates lower than summer). Still using 11KWh/day.
The only thing gubmint has to be slightly competent @ is inventing New Taxes......

Data.... it would be interesting to overlay the two curves..... Cost of Cali Weed over time, vs. the Cost of Cali Electricity. Cheap drugs, Expensive Electricity... one of those, I can live w/o, but not the other.....

It easy to pick on Cali, but the disease has spread to most "advanced" jurisdictions.....

The author of the article seems to treat grid batteries as supersized "D" batteries that will be used once and discarded, which is not exactly realistic.

Here in California, grid scale batteries are competitive with gas/ solar/wind on delivered power, where they aren't completely competitive is baseline load supply, unless they have been charged by a variable power source (wind or solar) during an excess production event (sunny, cool day, or a high winds overnight. So we see lots of batteries going in at homes, businesses, and grid scale plants, the latter almost always include batteries on recent deployments.

Bottom line, I think the author is not very informed about grid scale power.

All the best,

Peter
I read it twice, and I don’t see where you’re getting your opinion about him treating the batteries as one time usable alkaline D cell type
He talks about the number of battery units he stated as holding up the grid for one hour before needing to be recharged.

In fact he even talks about the question of how many years and cycles the battery can sustain.
Maybe you might want to read it again.

Wow, the land of a million regulations, still allows you to buy and run a fossil fuel powered generator.
How…very, nice of them…
I’m sure there’s plenty of regulations on how you can you it
In another thread, daugen posted about his sister recently going through an extended outage in Cali.

Ocean-side Cali, so likely not a low-end enclave..... everyone has whole house standby generators, and all grew tired of the din of generators running for days.

And... that's how the relatively well-off people are doing, with the Cali-grid.......

When we had the extended outages the sound was about the same as everyone out mowing their lawns with a Briggs and Stratton powered mowers.

My Honda EM 5000 was quietly under the back porch keeping the freezers/refrigerators at 4 homes going…

I still had it locked down with chain… many disappeared by just following the sound.

Stealth-mode.... same reason the military want that option @ times....

The usual play - steal a push-lawnmower (with gas in the tank), start it and leave it running beside a running portable gen you are going to lift.....

Most Hondas have been well-muffled, for a long time..... my FIL made that comment, about the ones he used in the Amazon jungle, MANY years ago...

I pay $0.11/kwh + delivery charge + Regulatory Charges (whatever they are)+HST = $0.1945/kwh. This is as long as in winter I stay under 1,000 kw hours/month.
In summer (May 1 to October 31) it changes to 600 kwh/month to stay in the scheme I am on. I have an oil furnace + wood heat both downstairs (wood furnace) and upstairs, free standing wood stove. I have an 8,000 watt genny for when our ever 'reliable' (NOT!) electricity goes out. Our advertising for electricity used to be 'safe, clean and reliable'. Not no more. It isn't safe either...Neighbours' house burned down, the breaker on the pole wouldn't trip. His two dogs were in the front porch, he had gone away for the day and leaves them in the front porch with the outside door closed and the door into the house closed as well.
The fire dept had to stand around and watch the house burn AND listen to the dogs die because the power company couldn't get off their royal duffs and shut the power off. Our fire dept cannot go into a burning building when the juice is on. That was about ten years ago.

It is OK to pick on California; our state has earned that. But not everyone here approves of the crop of bureaucrats who run our government.

That said, dope prices have been dropping since legalization in '97. Sad thing is that most is grown in buildings that use tons of power for lights, fans, irrigation, etc.

BTW, "Cali" is a place in Columbia. No one here calls us that.

Fire here carry long reach insulated cable cutters.

I’ve seen FD snip the live wires at the weathethead.

Pulling the meter is first but sometimes not possible.

This Canuck wouldn't be happy, being judged by our gubmint's behaviour..... just so we're clear, I'm not poking @ resident's eyes with a stick

No confusion or disrespect intended by "Cali".... I used to get out to the Valley (Silicon) and elsewhere in your State on business, but I can't pretend I picked that term up back then..... just lazy thinking and typing on my end :) years later....

I'll try to standardize on Left-Coast as an alternate expression..... I swear, BC is trying to outdo you guys, many months....

I saw something on TV recently, a few shots of the Del (Coronado).... have great memories of attending a conference there years back.... still remember my first drive over the bridge, looking @ only a portion of the Fleet @ dock..... pretty cool, esp. for a Canuck just used to seeing a few canoes in the water.

Another trip, drove from San Fran up to Mendocino..... liked NorCal, and now that I have a suitable MC, would love to take a bike and spend a week or 3 in your mountain ranges, and desert areas...... esp. attractive idea, while looking @ piles of snow today !
