Do You Have a Tractor Shed/Barn?

Concrete floor is a big plus…

Brother spent a lot renovating his 1850 dirt floor barn.

Everything inside gets covered with a layer of trust in no time.

His small shed was like that until he concreted the floor.

This was when I got the tractor in 2020, It was quick and easy to build. Not really cheap but at the time cheaper than anything else and I could move it easily. The 2x10's across the bottom were placed so the weight of the tractor kept it from moving in the wind.

Then a couple years ago I was finally able to add on to the shop.

I've got a 8' x20 steel carport. I'm able to store my forest winch and grapple along the side in the winter.

We have a 30x40 Barn/Shed/Shop - BSS for short. We intended a pole barn when design was planned in Feb of 2020. When the work started in June, we soon learned - no poles for you. Top of mountains tend to be pretty rocky. A foundation had to be built. There goes the budget.

We thought 30x40 - would be plenty of space:

This building was on the property when we bought it 40 years ago, it's a 24x36 pole building from Western Farmers COOP. It's not real fancey but gets the job done, our JD lawn tractor is stored in the lean-to on the left.

Depends on your climate and quality of finish on your equipment.
A high percentage of automobiles spend their entire time without shelter.

My neighbor’s tractor has sat out for ten years. It looks like it’s 30 years old: paint is chalky white, plastics are cracking, and seat is rotted off so there’s just the steel pan remaining.

Ha! You still have lots of space. I'll have to take one tomorrow to show you what "out of space" looks like :)

One of the "problems" many of us face is using "space".
I've over 5,000 sq ft FLAT, most of it with ceilings over 10' and up to 14' in one building.
When I bought the place (in 2011) the previous owner had the entire area of the sheds full. Hardly a square foot to work. In all of the buildings there was only a little shelving and all that was 6' high or less and held clothes. Just narrow aisles where one could barely walk through. Took about 2 years to clean out.
Now I consider the place "full" again. But I've plenty of work areas and floor space for projects.
One of the saving graces was the recession was still in effect and I was able to get lot's of pallet racking cheap. Thus I was able to line many walls with shelving and flat workplaces and in my taller buildings I've got storage areas that are 10' up.
Effectively doubling my "space".

Yeah, I think the main enemy is the sun damage.

As I said earlier, while I park in my tractor barn, I'll sure pull them out to get rinsed off if I know it's going to rain.

Mine lives outside under a tarp 8-9 months of the year. I squeeze it inside my workshop/garage for the winter. Keep thinking about building some sort of lean-to shed, but always something more important to do.
All my other vehicles live outside year round.

Not a great picture, but this is our pole barn. I’ll get a better picture when I get back to the farm this weekend.

It’s 30x40 with concrete floor.

At the time, we thought it’s too big and we will never fill it. Well —- with the tractor, a zero turn a few 4 wheelers, a trailer, 2 dirt bikes and a work bench area, it is getting tight!!

Finished in 2014, 40x60x12 6-12 roof, 100 lb snow load, vented 1' overhang, 3 12x10 OH doors 2 36" man doors and a 22x33 insulated, heated shop the SW corner with a separate compressor room. About 2' high plastic windows at the top for light, that work really well.

Started out with a 20x21 carport that we outgrew. A neighbor had a tree land on his during a hurricane, so we took the uncrushed half and added a 12' lean-to to the smaller one. Had a large 26x50 drive through built a few years ago, all working out well, and all out of tree falling distance!

Man, I'm sure jealous of your lighting!

The lean-too on the shop is the home for the LS and the Deere. Same for both sprayers and the tiller.

Have a spot all leveled and graveled and ready for a 'machinery shed' for more covered storage. Weather is the second biggest wear on machinery I believe other than use.

Mine is a 40x70 steel building with gravel floor, power and lights, but no heat or insulation.

So it is a shed, and not a "shop" in my opinion.

The one and only time it was empty (just after closing on the house, lol).

Just another day... normally the 5th wheel is parked in there too (and all winter), but it's out next to the house in this pic.
