What do you all do to be prepared for long term power loss?

If I remember correctly you son really didn't want any guns of yours because of his wife. So, if by chance for whatever reason your son and daughter in law should wonder into our "camp" unarmed when the world has gone to crap and they're looking for "help", I tell them to get lost or be killed?
Sig, I would expect you to do just that. Tell them to "get lost or be killed". They made their bed.

If you are talking about being out that long it will get quite bad. Most people can't feed themselves for 3 days let alone 3 months. IMHO a gas generator will do nothing but draw attn to yourself. Not generally a good idea.

What I struggle with is that I could not do just that.

Some think of Jesus Christ of carrying a sword to kill his enemies and justify that "sword", but I do not.

No different than how Muslims interpret the Koran IMO as far as killing others.

A very long time ago as a grunt working, I stopped to help a old lady shoveling her driveway (I could have gotten in a lot of trouble for doing so).

I stopped to help this older woman because I remembered what my mother had told me, to treat people like my mother would expect me to treat her and my father if I saw them in need.

When I saw that old lady working to shovel her driveway, I couldn't help but think if that was my own mother, so I stopped and helped her and did her driveway.

What I have learned in business is do what it right and let the chips fall where they will, and generally, it will work out.

When I give a bum panhandling on the street $20, I don't care if he buys drugs, it's what my intent is, NOT his (generally I offer to buy them food in person and see where it goes...).

When it gets to the point that I say no to everyone in need, in my own line of thinking as a Christian, I'm ready for Heaven as I know what Heaven is to myself and I'm done with being an arsehole ;)

Perhaps when you lose a son, it gives you a different perspective and being more at ease joining him instead of fighting for your life at all costs so you can breath on this world to give yourself another day;)

For myself, my own God judges you on your own actions even if you can't how everything plays out 100 years from now...

Unless you produce your own by farming, raising livestock or hunting most would be in a world of hurt shortly...

I'm not a hunter, but if there was a need I would.

Simply open the bedroom slider and aim.

Sooner or later though, if the grid is down, don't expect LP deliveries ;)
Thankfully, the local propane place is quite close.

I can either go and pick up a smaller tank with the little crane, or even a full 1,000-gallon tank with the large one.

Or, the driver has showed me where the keys for their delivery trucks are, in case feces do hit the fan.

A 22KW generator running 100% of the time will use approximately 3 gallons of LP per hour, and I could be wrong about that so someone can check me on that, but I do know I raised my hand in class to double check the usage (we have a 500 gallon tank) and all I know is when I did the math on the loads and usage of LP, no way could I justify it for the amount of time without power.

With our home, the below grade basement requires little to no AC in the basement during summer months. Been here going over 20 years. Numerous 3-5 hour down times with electric due to various storms. Worst I can remember is 3 days without power. Do have millivolt gas logs for back up heat which would help the first and second floor for heat in colder winter months.

NC is actually a pretty nice state when it comes to weather except for the summer months, but it's still better than SC or Georgia when it comes to being hot LOL

I‘m in the process of selling my home. I’m almost done. It has a 22KW whole house genset that runs on NG.

In my next home, we will be doing another stand by generator. My current system is natural gas, but the prepper in me wants to bury a larger than normal propane tank and keep it topped-off.

IMHO, if there’s an attack from within, I will more likely lose my NG connection at the street before I lose propane delivery. I would think the private propane deliverers will be able to deliver propane for a while longer and if there’s an attack, it will affect our energy delivery infrastructure.

Diesel power is another option, but it cannot be used as a power source for clothes dryer, water heater, etc.

My favorite idea is a large barn with a large solar panel roof mount set up and storage batteries.

End of the day, you do you sincerely expect to have more than a years worth of propane for the generator if it's that bad?

Why I say screw it and just get use to roughing it.

Sooner or later, you're going to have to rough it.

I'm guessing your LP delivery is more reliable than ours.

NOW, when nothing is going on in the world, we still have problems with LP delivery. When the SHTF I don't expect it to be more reliable LOL

You did hit the nail on the head though that a lot of people don't think about using NG as the fuel source. Valves are either electronic using electricity or manual.

No, but after a year in a war with no food or energy, only a small percentage of us will be alive anyway.

Yep. When it comes to roughing it, there’s not many better off than myself. I’m willing to kill & eat game or fish for it. I am well stocked with G&A and still a damn good hunter. I also have plenty of alternate forms of currency.

Oh, I dunno. I just assumed if its a first striek, I know NG will be shut off. There’ll be fires everywhere and our infrastructure will be bombed out of existence

That’s why my ultimate set up is solar with batteries on my property.

If power goes you will not be getting any propane delivered. Gas pumps that run the truck are electric. If power goes out for over a month it will be very messy.

They would need a generator to power the pump that replenishes the delivery trucks, as I understand it.

That part I couldn't do much about, other than bringing a generator, having never seen the process. Then again, it's probably very similar to when filling a tank from the delivery truck.
