Sprinkler,
Because the power goes out for a week is not the end of the world, unless you are on life support
Folks can be prepared and not be paranoid... Do you have a fire extinguisher, or wear seatbelts, house insurance, or sprinklers?
Weren't you ever a Boy Scout?

Haven’t we been hearing the same thing forever? The world is coming to and end we better be prepared.

I refuse to live a paranoid life.
Ya got that right. In high school we practiced hiding under desks in nuclear bomb attack….like a desk can save your butt. we dont stock much, cept toilet paper after last fiasco. Bought a bidet toilet seat also….

but the wife has always canned and we have loads of food. Im not going to live my life worrying about end times. But i do plan for our yearly power outages here that are a way of life in pacific northwest.

Got 12000 generator and the house is wired for full house generator. Our water is gravity fed from the tank in the village, haven't lost water yet. Septic is gravity fed. We got food and guns.

Not worried about it. If it's weather related this community will get roads open for EMS, power, etc.

If it's not weather and more of a nefarious reason, we got bigger problems

I never thought the desk was supposed to save me from a nuke, nor was it ever taught as such, at least in our drills. If you're within a mile or three of ground zero, depending on the size of the nuke, you and your whole school building are gone either way... no need or time to get under the desk.

But for the much larger population donut likely to be 5 - 20 miles from the point of detonation, initial injuries will be mostly from falling or flying debris. The desk was to protect you from falling ductwork, lighting, ceiling grids, and flying windows, as I remember it.

When I was a kid, I remember a half dozen fall-out shelters in my small town. If I recall, there was one under the high school, post office, at least two banks, and part of the courthouse... probably a few others I don't remember. But being only a kid when they were still actively maintained, I wonder now if the name "fallout shelter" was really accurate. Did these shelters have air filtration systems actually sufficient to protect those within from nuclear fallout, or were they just stout buildings designed to not blow over in a pressure wave?

You are absolutely right. I think I should be prepared for a natural event that may cause a long term power outage, say two or three weeks, but that's it. I do think I should also make sure I have at least enough water for my close neighbors and maybe some food. Just because they are not prepared doesn't mean I shouldn't help out. If it actually did happen, and I did provide some water and food for some folks living nearby, they would probably reciprocate afterwards with help for me of some sort. And even if they didn't I would still be happy knowing I did the humane thing.

We've been here 44 years. We used to lose power a few days each year so my across the road neighbor bought a 10kW generator.
He let me borrow it for a few hours so we could run well, water heater, etc. He said I should buy a generator, I said why when I can borrow yours?
So...I bought a 9kW one on sale telling him that will assure we never lose power. That was years ago, I run it once it a while but never needed it.
Our closest neighbor had a Generac system installed. We're good friends and they said if/when we lose power simply stay with them...but for many years now we lost power about every 3-4 years for about an hour.
Years ago the power company changed our line which now is on the same line as an exclusive sub division 3 miles away...lots of Dr's, lawyers, etc.

Prepping!?!
I have that discussion with my across the road preppers all the time. Lord only knows the quantity of canned goods, ammo, fuel, gold, etc they have stored, buried, hidden away.
We enjoy every day we can and don't live in fear. They on the other hand "know it's coming".

Areas where lines have been undergrounded do better.

In the area I’m familiar in Austria lines went from overhead with transformer towers to underground and the first benefit is virtually no more lightening cause outages.

The second is reduced cost of falling trees and limbs.

When I have guests visiting from there to the SF Bay Area I always hear about the poles and maze of overhead wires… so much so they take pictures.
