What do you all do to be prepared for long term power loss?

Lots of discussion from the perspective of "me and mine" having food, living isolated and "going it alone" in our own little enclave.

When it really falls apart, to Provide and Protect becomes critical, and you can't do it all on your own for 24 hours a day over an extended period.

The Amish get it regarding the basic needs of life and surviving long-term without grid electricity along with their sense of community. Much could be learned from them.

When things really fall apart, shared effort from a small trusted team of capable individuals, all working together will be a critical differentiator for surviving.

Planning who that might be ahead of time is as important as making sure you have stored food and fuel for the generator.

This is exactly the scenario that played out in the aforementioned book, "one second after".

I live very close to and know quite a few Amish. While it’s true they have great ability to survive, they now use cell phones and do have some “grid” like electric for their water wells, propane for heat sometimes. Amish machine shops run on large diesel generators to create their own electricity for welding & machining.

They can definitely grow their own food, raise their own cattle, milk their own cows and make their own clothing, but many will still have difficulties, but nothing like the zombie apocalypse in the cities.

We live in a rural (and lower per capita income) area with a couple of Amish Communities near by. I've worked directly with a few individuals over the last 2 years.

They tend to be generally industrious and inventive. Though cellphones are not allowed locally, they do permit use of generators and propane as mentioned...and some are using solar.

That said, they could survive for an extended grid down event without too much impact and minimal change of life style.

Not that I would want to live like the Amish for too long!!!

I live in a neighborhood of wealthy elites, and am counting on that old theory that you don't need to run faster than the bear, just faster than your buddy. If the SHTF here, I predict one other guy and I will be feeding our families on the rest of them. :D

My expectations is power from the grid will become unreliable and expensive. Pretty much what many destitute countries experience now. We have been fortunate in the US to have lived in a period of extraordinary high living standards. Most of which has been financed by deficit spending.

The debt is so large now that they do not even pretend that it can be sustained.

So if you can supply your own power you will be in a good place when the economy falls apart.

Well I have land to hunt and crop if needed to survive, as well as access to fresh water. I have close Amish neighbors who are friends that I could work with to help supply necessities and learn skills from that I may not know. I think me and my family would be fine...

Prepping!?!
I have that discussion with my across the road preppers all the time. Lord only knows the quantity of canned goods, ammo, fuel, gold, etc they have stored, buried, hidden away.
We enjoy every day we can and don't live in fear. They on the other hand "know it's coming".View attachment 868008
For us, being prepared means we do not live in fear.

You’d be surprised how many have hidden cell phones. I know dozens that have them.
