Thank you all for the warm welcome; the resources and advice here at TBN definitely had a hand in my choices. Especially the "buy bigger"/"wish I'd gone bigger" themes.

It isn't everybody who asks their tractor to relax by the fire after a hard day at work.

Mr. Kozal, what brand is your fire ring. It looks like a pretty effective smokeless design!

I've seen here alot of folks using a thumb on their backhoe. And thought if I had one i could use it to set smaller logs on my small sawmill. So I gathered some parts from my scrap pile.
After a week (an hour here and there) it's done. Not too pretty but it works. I'll clean it up and put some orange paint on it soon.

It is a Solo Stove Yukon. Crazy expensive (I got mine on a good sale) but I really enjoy it.

Straightforward and efficient Mr Gordon.

Looks like you stack as you go and move the splitter down the stack when needed.

I like your use of the bucket to prevent lifting up the rounds, also appears your splits end up on the table (likely you added that?), rather than the ground...so less bending over!

The splitter I currently use has the flat on the ram pushing wood into a stationary wedge...pieces don't always split apart before the ram hits full stroke and they get stuck in the wedge...so the next round is needed to push it through plus, most of my splits end up on the ground.

I know you're pretty savvy...

Do you think having the wedge on the ram is more efficient than a ram pushing the wood into a wedge?

I'm always looking for a bigger/faster "better" splitter for the next season!

I had a splitter with the wedge on the ram and sold it for one that has the pusher on the ram. (The new one also had a hydraulic lifter, since I'm not getting any younger.) I like being able to push the splits out the end and into my trailer when splitting in the woods. When splitting at home, I like that they are not dropping a my feet. I do have an exit table on the splitter, so the splits don't drop to the ground after each split. The only downside I see with this setup if that it requires any resplits be pulled back to the splitting area. For me, that trade-off works. Whether it works for you depends on your preferred work flow.

I think you can make either method efficient with some thought and experimentation on your set up. There are a lot of variables and trade-offs. Especially if you work in different locations like in the woods one tree at a time and out back beside the log pile. And everyone's priority list would be different.

In your case, like John said, a good sized output table would be a big help I would think. Another thing, if you plan on using a 2 or 4 way wedge I think it would be hard to mange the wood if the wedge was on the ram so the fixed wedge would be the choice.

I can't push the splits into my trailer with the ram like John likes to do but it is only a very short lob for me to get them into the trailer because I can turn my splitter around both ways on the trailer frame.

Looks like fir and aspen will fund your garage if you keep going like that. What are the specs on the aspen ? Chip Board ?? Good job piling with your tractor.
