Funny thing happened the other day. I took the stairs to my Doctors office, there was an older couple behind me so when I got to the office door I held the door for them and they got in line first, I thought that was rude!

Occasionally there are secondary benefits to ‘ladies first’.

They'd make us go up the stairs first because they were worried we'd look up the girls skirts if we were behind them.... we were 6 years old.

Actually I had an experience kinda related to yours.

There was a thrift store in Orangevale (far eastern edge of the Sacramento metro area) that I used to stop in to occasionally if I was in the area. A tall, slender, way good looking woman about 25 years old and I got to the door at the same time. I reached to open the door for her. I assumed she has been treated nicely by everyone since she was a kid, with looks like that. But she insisted on opening the door for me. I asked her why, just to start a conversation.

She said where we (store owner & staff) immigrated from, Russia, there aren't many older men around after our horrendous losses in WWII. So we were taught to honor you. It was just instinctive to hold the door for you.

Wow. I hadn't expected that. And thought do I look -that- old?

Anyhow I've never forgotten her warm smile.

. If I were a woman, I think I'd find any of those actions to be rather condescending, though I wouldn't bark at someone who did it but I probably would tell them politely that I'm perfectly capable of doing these things myself

Yep. For the most part if I get to a door before someone else, I hold the door for them regardless of age, sex, etc...

9 time out of 10, if it's a double vestibule door, they'll go in and return the favor on the 2nd door.
