John Deere STX 30 lawn tractor

[Patches]

I have the above mower and the trans/axle crapped on me; looking for a replacement of this 30yr old piece, but don't where to look. STX 30 and STX 38 utilize the same Peerless unit. Before you tell me to junk it, the rest of the mower is still in excellent shape and I'm 82 years old so not going to spend $5000 + on a new one ----- unless I have to

Did the transaxle actually fail or is it simply out of fluid? I have a Craftsman that lost its fluid. I can't get seals for it but it does have a fill port on the top. I drilled lower down for a hydraulic jack plug to check fluid level. I'll get a bit more life out of it - perhaps enough to outlast me as I'm 78.

Those yellow deck STX's are unbelieveable mowing machines.... very hard to kill. Did you call JD and see if it is still in service? Peerless is still making manual transaxles... maybe you could get service parts (or a.replacement) directly from them.

What's wrong with the transmission? I've had several not shift due to the grease drying out after 20 plus years. Splitting the transmission (not hard) and repacking with 00 corn head grease can be a remedy.

Thanks for that. I've been in the case once to replace two fractured shift keys about 12 years ago and filled it with corn head grease then. I have the unit out, but have yet to take top case cover off; too da--d hot

Update; purchased a new Peerless transaxle through a dealer in Missouri so we're back in business

The yellow deck machines are awesome. Then a certain manager took over and cost reduced them into the black deck machines.... they are the absolute worst.

Update; purchased a new Peerless transaxle through a dealer in Missouri so we're back in business

$520.00 + or - including shipping with a 2 year Peerless factory warranty. Had to adapt the left side front mount but other mounts bolted up. More than happy

If you're planning to go that route, check with the dealer I used ( RAMWORK, INC Butler,MO 660-679-5807) as the stock gearing in the MST unit is not ideal compared to the original 920-017 Peerless transaxle. This issue is correctable however

Wow, I had an STX 38 that I bought used for $200 and used it for 33 years. I gave it to a friend that fell on hard times and couldn’t afford to buy one. He is still mowing with it, lol. I then bought a new X300 that has been a real good mower thus far.
