You have no idea. We had clean fence lines and field edges. I quit/left the farm in 2006 and gradually returned to taking back all the ground from 2014-2018. By the time I had returned fences were grown up field edges had creeped in because nobody cares anymore. Have spent years working on getting everything back to where they belong. There are places I am missing 18-27' of field edge because they have grown in. Have removed all the brush from fence lines taken the loader and pulled in years of plowed out dirt that people kept rolling into the fences/brush. It doesn't take long when you don't care. But it is alot to bring it back. I have several more years of work left to do. Once caught up it's easy, until then...............

I will try to remember this post and post pictures when I have time.
Also, fences are good places for birds to rest and poop weed and briar and pook weed seeds; so fence row automatically has more large weed pressure than open field. Even missing 6 or 8 months of maintenance; your dealing with 8+ feet of nastiness (thick and tall, but not woody); and that's when people look at it and say F it.

Absolutely LOVE the work you do mowing with the skid steer. I could look at the before and after photos for hours...Christ, this thread is 52 pages so I have been.
I'm glad you like it, I will try to keep posting some before and after photos along and along.

I am considering a flail. How did your flail do compared to a rotary cutter?

I thought it left a much nicer finish than any of my rough cut bush hogs leave and the customer yesterday commented on how much better it looked than when cut before, and he doesn't know a thing about tractors and mowers. I do believe it can probably get expensive when you have to replace the blades, on this mower their are 42 sets of blades but they can be flipped and used to cut on both sides and appear to be heavy duty.

Do you spray the fence line with chemicals? I'm still building my fence, but it's slow going. Areas that I have cleared, and built the fence are now starting to grow back. I've mowed and sprayed roundup on the fence, but it doesn't last. I tried another product that is supposed to keep the ground clear, but it doesn't work either. I think that I need to find something stronger. It's such a waste of money buying chemicals that don't do anything.

Eddie, you can try a section using Pramitol. Not sure what the chemical name is but I know there is a generic for it that I get at Ag South/Supply. It doesn't last forever but being a ground sterilization product it does last quite a bit longer than Roundup. I mix it with Roundup and 2,4D.

I don't generally spray anything other than weed and vine killer in fence rows, I have on two different occasions seen a whole tree line of massive oak trees killed by people practicing with chemicals that they didn't know anything about and spraying it in the drip line of those big trees.

Did you pick that up at Weeks June auction? I saw a pretty new JD flail at the auction, and saved it; but didn't bid.

Edit: wrong picture, I must have nor screen shot the flail, only the tiller
