After Dec 31st 2025 no new gas hookups in New York State. All the residents of NYS are at the mercy of the voters in New York City...
It should be interesting to hear how new houses after that date will heat their houses.

Per the Twit that the cityites have elected and her incredibly stupid legislature with "green" electricity. Just ignore all those natural powered gas turbines for generating peak electricity.
Just just one of their wondrously idiotic rules and regulations, gee I wonder why they want to restrict firearms from lawful adults.

So you have a bit more then a year to get it done in.
I actually switched to a gas (propane) stove because of their damned bullcrap. I had been thinking about it for a while and that was the tipping point.
I am still nervous. It's very slow going trying to get this project off the ground. I should feel comfortable with 15 months to go before the ban kicks in, but I am not based on how the last 2 years have gone in terms of delays on the part of contractors.

I told my GC this morning he needs to give me a start date soon. If nothing happens in the next month I will be forced to start on it myself.

I work 70-75 hrs a week at my job and not sure I can pull off building myself in the off hours I have available. I generally don't ask for help so would be working alone.

Well, there is no real plan. The pie in the sky idea is hydrogen, which we have no infrasructure for and is multiple decades away at best.

These idiots also want to use hydrogen to store energy to suppliment the grid. However the electrolysis process is only 70% efficient. So they generate electricity with their windmills and solar panels (which are pretty bad for the environment when you take into account their carbon footprint for manufacture, installation, maintenance, removal and disposal) and generate hydrogen with the electricity. Then store the hydrogen and burn it when they need to generate electricity to suppliment the grid, which has more inefficiences bringing the total efficiency to around 65%. So 35% of the electricity is wasted.

Burning natural gas is way better from an energy density standpoint as well as all the infrastucrure is already in place.

Yes humans are increasing the carbon ppm in the atmosphere, but the fear mongering about ruining the planet is absurd. I hate to say it but this is where we end up when voters choose leaders based on emotion as opposed to logic.

If you have to start building on your own, can you build just one part of the building, or one room, or even a shed, and have gas connected to it?

Then when the entire building is done, run your gas lines through the building?

I don't think so. The gas company will only install the meter on a dried-in structure (or very close to that). And only on structure that has stamped and approved plans, and that has passed the first few of many inspections. For my design this means the 48' x 96' pole barn structure. So I'd have to put that up. And it's a post frame structure, so really has to be fully built to be structurally sound.

If it comes down to it I have a quote from a pole barn company to put that up. They are Mennonite builders whose word actually means something, not like all these others who have been ghosting me. If by the end of 2024 if my GC is still having issues getting going, I'll pull the trigger on having that company get the shell up. They won't do any other work, just the shell, and I would have to do the rest myself to get it to a point new natural gas service can be installed.

Our new house in Oregon will be all electric. Heating and cooling will be with mini splits. With the electric and gas rates there, which are pretty typical for most of the US, it's far cheaper to heat with mini splits. But even more important, I've stayed in places with mini splits and they're super comfortable. With the central air/heat in our CA home the blower and furnace or A/C goes on, then goes off, then goes on. So the temp fluctuates. The mini splits just ramp up and down as needed to keep the temp steady.

I'm looking forward to not having propane. No worrying about getting a delivery when we're nearly out. No tank of explosive fuel to spew flames or explode in a fire. There is some footage out there from I think the Camp fire in Paradise that shows tanks with big jets of flame spewing from their vents, and in the distance, sounds of tanks exploding.

The utility there has a mix of sources with a lot of renewable and they're adding more all the time. We'll probably put in solar as well. If it's big enough it will offset all our use.

I at least want the option for natural gas and don't feel the govenment has real justification to outright ban it. I specifically bought this parcel of land over others becaue gas was available. I would not want to deal with propane.

Electricity rates in this area are pretty much the highest in the country, which is odd being right next to Niagara Falls...

Sometimes I feel that that New York State just hates people and wants us all to leave.

Are you installing a whole house generator?

When I built my house, I went all electric too. I now consider that a big mistake and I’m working on getting Natural Gas to it.

My first year heating it through an East Texas winter shocked me with the jump in my electric bill. After a few years of that, we lost power for a week. I had a small generator, but no fireplace or wood stove. It was an a very cold week! !

That Summer I installed a wood stove and that’s all I use to heat with now. I also have a bigger generator, but not as big as I need.

My long term plan is to have a big NG generator to deal with power issues that seem to happen more and more frequently

For me, long term plan is to have a NG whole structure generator. It would be 3 phase capable and used to run some machine shop equipment and possibly some wood working equipment. I have to decide at a future date to go with power converters or a 3PH generator. It really depends on if I can get this built before the ban, and then what happens to the price of gas after the ban.

I will have a large south facing roof so do want to do solar as well at some point.
