You Have a Cab?

For folks who don’t enjoy their time outside in the elements, a cab is a good option. You couldn’t pay me to own one though. My full time job is in a climate controlled factory. I really enjoy my outside time on the tractors after work and on weekends. I do have a big canopy on one of my tractors though, which makes tractor operation much more comfortable in the sun and rain.

I love my cabbed tractor, but still kick myself for selling the old jd870 open station. Sometimes the cab gets in the way.
Very true.

I was lucky enough to be able to keep my open station tractor instead of trading. Both types are necessary to maintain the estate.

Open station by choice for the last 5 years, and it was not a financial decision. After all, it's a time machine, not a tractor.

It enables me live life like I did when I was 10 - playing outside everyday, chasing whatever adventure I choose - no matter the weather conditions.

Bring on the sun, bring on the cold...I like all of it. It keeps me young!

Open here too. Like Oosik noted, I rarely have any need to be out in foul weather, and summer heat isn't too bad here. Plus, a lot of the work I do with it entails a lot of get off/get on/get off, which would be a PITA with a cab.

Open here.

Lots of tight woods and the point about on/off all the time is huge. I'm rarely in the seat for more than 5 minutes at a time.

I notice most of you guys who like being in the elements are kinda situated in the northern US.

But I wonder if a 10 hour day of running a batwing cutter in 110 degree heat, and letting the dust, chaff, yellow jackets, and sharp oak limbs enrich your outdoor experience.... might change your minds? ;)

I also wonder how many hours a year open station guys put on their tractors? (I don't see many guys who operate tractors full time, as a living, like farming or ag service company, and such as this running open stations much)

Wish there was a reliable way to poll users here.

Yeah, I'm roughing it! :)

My ridged harrow can get you pretty dirty as well.

When freezing rain is coming down, and the cattle need hay in the morning, I am thankful for a cab then too.

It can get a bit crowded in the cab when my giant schnauzer jumps in the open door though!

I have to say that my cab keeps my rifle and scope pretty clean and handy in case I need it.

When I have to road the tractors, or mow bar ditches, I have a convenient place to mount the rear facing flashing lights, so I don't get run over by texting drivers. o_O

Guess I'm just a cab kinda guy!

Open cab in the woods alot.
This, but when you're out making hay you start feening for a cab like a basehead feens for a pipe, especially now that I'm in my 40's. I wish we owned a cab tractor.

I will admit that small tractors are generally ugly with cabs if that's important.

Ya….after the first time finding a nest of ground hornets…or bees…on the open station. Once was enough. I ran like a little girl

Not anymore.i simply laugh at the little buggers while they attack the glass.

Ill never go back to an open station. Heck, ive worked construction my entire life. I enjoy the ac cab. Even chopping wood, im all sweaty then climb into cold cab. Heaven.

I live about 90 miles south of the USA/Canada border. We do not get the high heat and humidity like those of you further south and east.

Also - I don't think I've ever seen a farmer with a large open station tractor - out in the fields.

One of the major reasons I do not have any type of bush hog - no cab.

I've been able to drive a really large tractor and so some disking in very large wheat fields. It simply would not be possible without a cab and AC.

It can get really "exciting" to be going down wind with a large tractor and disk and have the dust cloud catch up with you. It's just like a white out in a snow storm, only it's dust. And there is not much that can be done to prevent this. You just hope it clears enough so you can see the end of your run in time.

I think we are very fortunate up here to be able to use our equipment and not have to be bothered by heat/humidity. Very fortunate, also, to not have to use my equipment ten to twelve hours EVERY day. Regardless of the weather.

Wow, I'm usually done after only six hours of pulling the 10' mower in a day. By the third day I really don't feel like doing it anymore.

Without a cab I'd probably only last a couple of hours per day, and hot here is 80 degrees.

When not mowing, I tend to change implements somewhat frequently, but while getting in and out of the cab may take two seconds longer than without doors, it's something I'm used to from driving cars and pickups.

Also, I really prefer working outdoors, and have had convertibles for most of my life, but there comes a point when enough is enough.

I always think it's funny when someone complains about having to open a door to get in and out of a tractor. They have to open a car door way more often, but i bet they wouldnt give up their air conditioned car for one without.

No I don't. Do I want one? Not really.

It would be nice blowing snow but I only get that privilege maybe once or twice every 2 - 3 years. A warm snow suit and boots and spare gloves warming up in the house and I'm good to go. Also I can generally blow snow so that it doesn't come back at me.

As for mowing grass. I only get itchy a few times a year. A shower when I get home takes care of that.

There are times when cab would be nice but now I can crawl in and out of ditches without tipping over. That fact alone is worth more to me than having a cab.

Yes there are trade off's but I'm happy with what I have. It works for me.
