So, back in 2005, I had my first decent job as an assistant superintendent, and wanted to get a nice, new truck; in part, because everyone else had one. I was single, making what I thought was good money, and per-diem that paid for my rent. Anyways, at the time I drove a '95 Dakota, regular cab, 2wd, stuck, 2.5L 4 cylinder, paid for. I looked at Tacoma, and Colorado; and even took a Colorado Z71, 4x4, 5 cylinder, extended cab on a GM special deal 24 hour test drive. Really liked the truck, and almost bought it, but it was $33.5k. About 18 hours into having it, I thought, I don't want automatic, don't know what an MP3 is so why am I paying for an MP3 player, don't want power windows, and don't want extended cab. I take it back and tell Chevy, find me a reg cab, 4x4, stick shift, crank windows, and I'll sign now.

Anyways, they find on in Atlanta, but want like $2500 to bring it down, so I tell them to get lost and leave. About 3 weeks later, I'm at work on a Saturday, bored, about 500 ft from a different Chevy dealer, and stop in. They had a Chevy 2500HD, extended, 4x4, 6.0 gas, for $35k. Guy comes up and says, want to test drive. Now, I'm like 22 or 23 at the time, and I told him, nah, I'm not buying. He shrugs and says you don't have to buy to test drive. Test drive it, like it, and think, you were "this" close to paying $33.5k for a Colorado; this is twice the truck for only $1.5k more; and I bought it.

Now, I think that part gets a lot of people, and that's what a lot of the 2500/250s are doing in a neighborhood. Funny part, I mostly drove to work, with maybe 250# of tools, did off roading, and cruising around in it; and would have been much better off At The Time, with the Colorado or a K1500, than the 12.0 mpg 2500. Yes, part of it was seeing all the other guys having 3/4T and 1T at work, and another part was I was young and had spare money.

I think I had that 2500 from 2005 to 2014 or so; and had a bad wreck in it, and had some money changes, lost per diem, got married, had son, and that spare money went away. I was stubborn about getting rid of the truck till I just couldn't afford to fix the transfer case, and sold it for cheap.

If I had a budget in the 20-40K range for a truck, I’d buy the best used Ram/Cummins I could find. 2nd choice would be a southern, non-rusted GM HD Duramax or a deleted/studded Ford 6/6.4L
If it was a gasser, I don’t know. I haven’t owned a gas truck for 30 years.

For a 20-40k budget, I would look at 1 year old fleet vehicles. My 2019 Ram I bought used in Oct of 2019 was one of 9 used 2019 white ram 4x4 crew 6'8" beds at the dealer. It had 19,00 miles, and I saved about $10k over new. I know there is some hate for used fleet, off lease, or ex rentals, but there is also a lot of savings on them too

Definitely a "needs based" decision.
I tow heavy 3-4 times a week hence the need for a diesel HD truck.
You have different just-as-important needs

Have you ever considered on the light-medium duty Isuzu diesels? The are the most un-cool vehicles around, but for a non-CDL, delivery truck, often with a 12 ft flat or stack side, I would think they'd make excellent hay haulers

I "think" you could get 6 4x5 bails on just the flat bed;

No, they can't haul enough bales and lack the power to pull a loaded trailer

We went many years without a truck but finally did get one in 2017. Has been good decision and we must be towing things more often than most folks do.

I guess "need" is a strong term, but a heavy, 4WD truck sure is handy for pulling boats up a muddy ramp at the river.

The old '84 did the job pretty good too.

You could pull that with a properly equipped car, too

So I'll kinda wrap my thoughts up;
1) you can do a lot with a full sized car equipped right, or an SUV, and often people think they Need the truck, and use that Need as an excuse for the purchase
2) nothing wrong with buying what you want, and you don't need to justify it to others
3) a truck, of any size, does offer a lot od utility
4) some people it Is absolutely a necessity
