We reside within a snow belt and all we have driven for 30 years is awd suv's. Today we have a ford ranger and bronco, both with hitches. The 275hp ranger is tasked with the towing job.

Heck I get told regularly I use my outback as more of a truck then most people with trucks. Hauled tires , deer , farm supplies and much more. I have a trailer I made for towing behind the Subaru. Haul my atv and kayaks etc at once. Tows pretty nice actually and still got 24mpg awd with about 1300 trailer load.

I bought this car strictly for long distance work travels. Been a blessing in many long across state trips home to Michigan. Truck sits unless I can’t stack the lumber in the car or It’s hauling. Debating selling the f350 and going to a medium duty for cost and hauling ability.

A truck bed offers the ability to load from the top and sides. Can’t do that with a car or SUV.

This feels like an electronics class I had. Professor asked "is AC or DC power better?"

I just kept my mouth shut and smiled as several started debating...

They call it a trailer.
I have both, and use them interchangeably. But there are definitely times, particularly when going into tight towns or the city, when I really just don't want to deal with an 84" wide trailer. Same with if I'm making a big loop of several stops in my errands, taking a trailer to each can be a PITA, and so it's nice to be able to just load something into the pickup when it's not too heavy for the vehicle.

Each has their place, open pickup trucks and SUV/minivan. So either buy one of each, or pick your compromise accordingly!

Why have to buy and register a car and a trailer when I can just use the truck?
A trailer would need enclosed sides too because I’ve gotten loads of compost and crushed rock, as a couple examples

Have you ever considered on the light-medium duty Isuzu diesels?
Debating selling the f350 and going to a medium duty for cost and hauling ability.
When my GM crew cab dually 4X4 was on the ragged edge for what it was asked to do (weight, brakes, and power) a friend at a dealership suggested getting a medium duty.

I liked the idea of the stouter vehicle, but looking into them i found that they weren't exactly cheap, and that parts were also expensive. Used Class 8 tractors on the other hand didn't cost all that much, and parts were usually cheaper than for a car, such as brake drums for example.

Ended up buying a Peterbilt and enjoyed it a lot. It was also a great learning experience since I had never worked on anything like it before. Of course, I also had to learn how to drive it in the first place. Sure glad I bypassed the medium duty.

A doesn't need to tow very often because it has a bed that can take large and dirty things that you wouldn't put in your suv. So I would suspect your suv gets used to tow more than a truck.

I tow a trailer with my scaffolding. If I had a truck, I wouldn't need my trailer for scaffolding.
