I have a pair of 8AWG from the battery to the rear Anderson 50amp receptacle. Would like to connect this to the trailer battery but concerned about how much amperage a low battery at either end would try to pull. I do have a 60 amp breaker switch in the line.
Anyone care to guess how the 8AWG would fare with about 22 ft total length?

60 amps is over the rating for 8 gauge but that’s intended for continuous use and includes enough safety margin for your house not to catch on fire. The 8 gauge would almost definitely be fine for the amount of time it takes to cycle the dump trailer with 60 amps. 8 gauge romex is rated for 40 amps but 8 gauge THHN wire is rated for 55 amps.

Thanks! That is some feedback I've been looking for. I've been using the 8AWG and 60 amp breaker to drive a 3500lb winch under heavy load but don't know how many amps it pulls.

The pic below is the nameplate on the trailer pump showing 1.6KW which equates to around 130amps at 12VDC. Can I assume that the pump motor would just slow down and not burn out if that amperage was cut in half or would it soon trip the 60amp breaker?

Yes, I've looked at the wire gauge charts but there are so many variables in the real world.

Low power input is what burn electric motors under a load up, such as on winches.

Yes, there are many variables, but that's the whole idea with those charts. Can't just go by amp draw for a given size, the length plays a big role, too.

You're pretty close according to this chart showing 8AWG pair delivering 22-24 amp at a total length of 50 ft. (Have to double the length of one wire)
