Brakes on Massey 1739E, old school clutch and brake.

My question is. - If I'm going down a step hill carrying a load in my front loader bucket.
' If my back tires come off of the ground, will I still have brakes on the front wheels?
I have some fire wood at the bottom of a steep hill I'd like to get.

This is the Massey Ferguson 1739E.
It's old school.
It does not have the Hydro clutching mechanisms.

If you have the 4WD engaged, you'll have brakes on the front axle. If it's in 2WD, you'll only have brakes on the rear axle.

Just be aware of that or you'll be on a ride downhill with your only hope being lowering the loader as fast as possible while applying the brakes.

Even if the rear tires don't come off the ground, if they're light they'll have minimal braking power. Backing down the hill might be safer. I do that sometimes if I am carrying heavy logs in the grapple.

I've told my story on our MF1533... like a dope I went down our 300-400 elevation drop drive with a 400lb load on the front, nothing on the back.

As @ptsg mentions, it got my attention real fast.

The hurrier I go the behinder I am... I now always check I am in 4wd and have a load on my rear even if I have nothing on the front!

Lesson learned...

Scarriest day of my tractoring life... back down the hill with a load on those tractor forks...

My 4 wheel drive is a little lever that sticks out near the floor board. You have to keep your right foot on it. It's more difficult to engage and you can not press brakes because you have to keep it pressed to keep it engaged.

If I'm wrong somebody correct me.

That's the rear diff lock pedal. It locks both left and right wheel together.

That's not the 4WD lever. Please check your manual to see where the 4WD lever if before you attempt doing any work on hills.

It will most likely be on the left hand side of the tractor. It has two positions. Engaged and disengaged. It will stay in position too.

It's the orange t handle. Pull up to engage, push down to disengage.
