I would actually say that anyone with even moderately hard water needs a softener on the whole house, even if you don't think you do. Any amount of hardness will reduce the life of everything that water runs through. Calcium will build up on the inside of the pipes, on faucet valves, in your dishwasher and on heating elements in water heaters. Adding a water softener can extend the life of everything else that will cost you more in the long run than the cost of a softener.Do you really need "soft" water for the whole house? If it causes staining on plumbing fixtures or clothing after washing, pipe damage, etc., you probably do.
The water in my area is extremely hard. When my FIL lived across the street he would need to replace his water heater every 2 years due to calcium build up, he had no water pressure and water flow was poor do to calcium in the pipes. My last water heater lasted 17 years and my dishwasher is 26 years old (used every day) and still running well and I have no issues with water flow and pressure.
