welding on the tractor

Hello, I need to weld some hooks on my bucket on my 1705, do I need to unhook the battery before welding?

Also place the ground clamp as close as possible to the weld and make darn sure the welding current cannot go through any bearings. I probably didn't need to say so but folks do sometimes make the mistake of having welding current passing through stuff that rotates.

GC1705 uses DL100 FEL which is just a greaseable pin. pretty much built in slop

Not familiar with your model, but it might be easier to disconnect the bucket instead of disconnecting the battery. Getting to mine is a PITA.

I don't have quick release on my bucket so I will have to do it the other way.

I am so glad I went with the Bobtach quick release system, I’m not even sure if Bobcat offered permanent attachment in 2009.

it takes 5 minutes to fully remove a DL100 FEL (Front End Loader) from GC series tractor. I often do it multiple times a week.

I have welded several times on my tractor without disconnecting the battery. I simply grind a bare spot for the ground clamp close to the work area to ensure the path way.
My work included some heavy bucket hooks.

My 'work' included wrecking an instrument cluster, esp the tach which now pins the needle at low idle.

PTO speed is now 'sounds about right'.

You guys go ahead & I'll wait to hear if you got luckier than I did.

Ummm... My GC1715 has a DL95 FEL.... Either one was optional on early 17xx

No. I've welded on many tractors/backhoes/skid steers/dump trucks/pick ups, and didn't unhook the battery.

You can take the front bucket off the loader frame in a few minutes too.

on a dl100 yes, very easy. like 15 minutes. remounting little more time consuming.
on dl95 little harder.
dl100 is 7/16 socket and wrench and a ball peen hammer

I usually take mine off in the fall to mount the plow, and put it back on in the spring.

I can do it in a few minutes. Pull the screws, lower it on to a dolly, push the pins to one side, with a drift, until they clear the arms, and roll the bucket away.

If you've ever spent any time around a grounded welding table, you'll notice that there is often a spark between the work and the table when an arc is struck, that can happen inside a bearing if the current passes through it, causing a pit, and subsequent early failure. That's why people recommend placing the ground as close as possible, plus you get a better weld with a secure close ground. As for the battery disconnect, with the newer stuff that's loaded with mosfets, you definitely want to open the circuit that could introduce spurious voltages. Even on the older stuff with steam gauges, why risk cooking an alternator diode, plus, as stated, it gives you a chance to clean the terminals.

I smoked the voltage regulator on my JD-1070 a dozen years ago while moving the front weight bar upwards to accommodate a front snow plow. Yes i had the positive terminal off. Since then it's been remove the part involved if possible or bolt the pieces on I am adding. Same 'religion' practiced on my JD diesel lawn mowers. Fool me once, ....

And talk about OLD school.. when I put my bucket hooks on I used oxy-acetylene. No electrical issues with that!
