Haven't bought it but let's just say my interest is peaked. I have watched FB for a YM359 I could pay cash for, for a while. Finally, I found one but it looks like a transformer that lost to a Decepticon and pushed off a cliff. A rental tractor but it was serviced by the company that sells the tractor, a Yanmar dealer/rental. Which is where I bought the SA425.

Thoughts on buying a rental unit? I believe it has well more than half its useful life left in it. The price is about half of a new one.

Probably a little biased but I don't think a better tractor in this size can be bought.

I'm not saying it isn't agood buy. But have you ever heard the saying, "It looks like it was worked like a rented mule?"

LOL, I have and agree. It does look that way. I think the mule has a lot of life left in it though. It's a Yanmar that has been properly serviced.

I want if for primarily bushhogging and it is a perfect bushhog tractor. With the iHMT tranny and everything. I could drive into a patch of scrub and not worry about scratching it.

Looks like mostly cosmetic damage. Is it mainly just a missing grill? That sure whouldn't affect the use of it.

I bought a rental tractor. It was 5 yrs old. Had 1050 hrs on it and looked like it had been in a demolition derby, dents and scrapes all over it. I ran it for 14 yrs replacing only the starter and fuel transfer pump. Rebuilt one cylinder. It was a good buy.

Not sure. I know a guy who works at the place selling it. A very good man who would shoot straight with me. If I get serious about buying it, he will be my first call.

I'm just trying to decide if now is the right time or not. My retirement plan is to do tractor work, but I'm not planning to retire for a while. I have a tractor and do tractor work but only on a small scale.

Just remember, the FIRST half is always the BEST half!!

Personally, I'd not buy the second half...

Ive had mixed success with buying old rental equipment. Some works out ok, others not so good. Ive been in const a long time and see what hell people put rental equipment thru. It takes all the skill the owners have to keep the thing running.

Whats really sad, i bought my cabbed 45 hp tractor brand new in 2011 and it only cost $26k. Prices have gotten so ridiculous im keeping my baby well taken care of. I never want to buy another tractor.

I think everything has a value. It just depends on how close you and the seller are on what that amount is.

The good: rentals at a good shop may be serviced on a better schedule than most

The bad: renters will use them like bulldozers
I have bought a box blade and a tiller at a rental shop with good results, but I’d never buy a tractor there.

I went to look at a used (ex rental) M6040 at the local dealer.

The inside looked like a New York subway car, and the rear tires were 2/3 gone. In 300 hours.

Ended up buying a new one for about 10% more, one that hadn't been repeatedly cold started and revved up. Now, after 1,400 hrs the rears are at least 90%, the cab is still clean inside, and it's been serviced at least as well as a rental.

Among the best extra money I ever spent.

You place your bet and take your chances.

I would think they would have the maintenance records available so at least you could get some idea of the history and any major previous work done.
