PEX crimp tool?

It doesn't get any simpler than this clamp, no special tools required. However, I think its pretty new so it doesn't have much history and as such I'd be hesitant to use it somewhere that I could not check for leaks like behind a sheetrock wall.

Well, I'm glad I guess that I bought that crimper. Ended up having to basically redo the entire house. I started off with Pex-B, cause the PolyB to PexB connectors are cheap, and readily available, thinking I only needed to replace one or two places where rodents chewed the line.

Well, that went sideways fast, and they ate threw most of the cold water side, and a couple places on hot. At that point, I had already started with pex, but I seriously considered just starting over with CPVC, but I didn't.

My feelings on Pex are more mixed now, instead of 100% negative. It's dang difficult to crimp in tight areas with a 2 handed crimper, and in one case, I couldn't get the crimper in the area and resorted to sharkbite tee ($17). As mentioned, long runs are marginally easier than cpvc. The big plus was snaking it around obstacles, and yanking it out from top, and feeding it top down through the existing holes, and going below and pulling what you need.

Another down side, Home Depot is 35 mins away, vs Ace at 10 mins, and Ace only carries Pex-A.


A funny upside, it's a heck of lot easier to transport a roll of pex or even 20 ft sticks, than 20 ft sticks of cpvc

As for the long runs, cpvc, you can easily push a 20 ft stick, glue your coupling, add another 20 ft and push. It's not that easy to push Pex

Also, PexB pipe is surprisingly cheap, and fittings expensive, vs cpvc, where the pipe is quite a bit more, but the fittings are dirt cheap. Yes, you do use less fittings with Pex, but you do still use them.

My main complaint is crimping in confined spaces, vs dab some glue, insert and twist...

Oh, and PEX is a joy to cut, not that PVC/CPVC is bad, but pex just cuts easy, straight, and never cracks when cutting

A cinch band crimper is much more compact than the band crimpers. A pex expansion tool completely cures the problem because they can expand it then stick it in the tight area. I made a 30 ft run with pex through a closed area by pushing a tape measure through then pulling a string back and pulling the pex with the string.

That's a trick I didn't think off. I was thinking of tieing a 1" nut to a string and throwing it threw the gab, and pulling pipe, but the tape measure sounds better.

There was another flexible tubing, used for many years in mobile homes, that had problems, but it wasn't PEX.

Polybutaline, and that is what I was dealing with, which is why the sharkbite didn't work.

I've pulled PEX with a Chinese finger puzzle and fish tools just like NM electrical.
