In my state, part of the tax on fuel goes to road work.

"Historically, state-generated revenue for Michigan transportation programs has come primarily from two “road taxes”—motor fuel taxes and vehicle registration taxes.1 Both of these tax sources are restricted for transportation purposes under section 9 of Article IX of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.2"

I would like to see the fuel tax eliminated and adopt your idea of taxation based on mileage for all vehicles. Maybe factor in weight as heavier vehicles cause more wear and tear on roads.
So would this be a Federal tax? If not how are they going to determine which state gets my money? Will I have a GPS monitor on my car to show which state I drove in? I live near the state border.

My information shows there is both a State and Federal component to our Fuel taxes.

You can check your state here:

On the Federal tax, ICE owners should be irate. EV's use federally funded roads and do not "pay their fair share" by not paying the tax.

I am one, especially when charging stations are either free or subsidized and there's no mileage tax (charged) either.

You're right that ICE drivers are paying more. But the numbers I posted yesterday showed that, at least in PA, total money going to registration + taxes for EV and ICE weren't that terribly far apart. Something like $0.20 per day difference.

So, I consider it one more incentive to get the masses of mundane commuters in their crappy old and slow Hondas and Toyotas into an EV. If enough head that way that the state actually notices it in their budget, I have no doubt the rates will go up, accordingly.

While I'm not driving a Ferrari, or even Massey's GT-40, I'm not going to let $0.20 per day sway my vehicle buying decision one way or the other. I might burn more gas than that sitting at useless unnecessary red lights, which always seem to favor the direction from which there's absolutely no traffic.

So you favor a federal mileage tax? Would owners self report mileage or is there another way you would find out how many miles are driven?

There isn't the manpower available to look at odometers during license renewal.

I'm all for fairness but I don't have an answer. I definitely don't want any government tracking me watching where I drive.

In California the smog testing required to renew, includes recording the miles shown in the car's computer. All automatic - they plug into the diagnostic port.

This data is uploaded to DMV even before you pay and are handed the test results.

In this scenario, the state would have to report the mileage to the feds so they could tax you per mile then, or the feds would have to plug into your vehicle themselves.

We have no inspection of light vehicles except in Chicago and St. Louis I think.

If the state is taxing for use of their roads, there is no way to track the mileage driven in state without GPS.

If I drive back and forth the Florida a couple times per year. I don't want to pay Illinois for those miles driven.

Please find me a "free or subsidized" charging station.

I pay $204/year "EV Fee" no matter the miles driven. I pay more tax to drive the EV than my ICE vehicles.
