Hello all,

So, I really could use a utility side by side for around my 8 acres. Mainly for fence repair, general maintenance, irrigation repairs and target setting out to my 200 yard range. And of course some trail riding while camping. I am looking at five different machines. Most are three seaters. No need for a six seater. Here they are not listed in any particular order;

1 CFMoto UForce U10 Pro
2 Kawasaki Ridge/Ranch Edition
3 Polaris Range 1000
4 Honda Pioneer 1000-5
5 Can Am Defender X MR

I know there are others on the market. I was really interested in a Massimo T-Boss 1000, but they are not available in Kalifornia. My main focus here is ease of service, riding comfort and durability. So, if you happen to have one of these machines, can you kindly chime in as to what you do and don't like about it. I have ridden in a Honda Pioneer before and it was a great machine. I kicked the tires on a Kawasaki Ridge and it looks like a great machine, but getting to the air filter looks like a pain in the rear. I have yet to sit in any of the other three. Mainly because there are none on dealer floors in the Stockton area. I really want to look at the CFMoto. A Tracy dealer is expecting some in early May.

Ok, thanks guys/gals. B.

Add Club Car and golf carts in general to your wish list. They don't come with 1000cc engines...I'm not sure how important that is on 8 acres.

Why are you considering the mud machine Can Am Defender X MR??

I went with Kawasaki for my place because I wanted it to be reliable and the ability to get parts. Some of the brands you listed should also be easy to find parts for them, but I'm not sure of all of them. What's interesting to me is how quickly something you buy is all of a sudden ten years old!!!

If I was to buy again today, I might consider a golf cart over the Kawasaki just because we mostly use it to get the mail and haul boxes to the burn pile. Not having to buy gasoline, or change the oil, or mess with an engine makes a golf cart more appealing to me than what I already have.

The Kawasaki Mule lineup is good the "Mule" in the 4000 series is a hard working utility vehicle, not flashy and fast but work horses. The Ridge series look interesting.
The CF Moto, Massimo, Bennchee are all good budget cost machines. They seem hit or miss on longevity and durability. One will be good and the next a piece of crap. My Warrior 800 has been a good rig for me it has had a few hiccups but all in all fairly good.

We got our 1st used atv some 8 or so years ago to help us work on trails. Found the darn thing so handy on trails and yard work, we bought a new one 4 years later. Go figure.

You forgot Yamaha.Owned atv/s by s since the early 80's.Honda,Suzuki,Kawasaki and Yamaha.Had my Kawasaki for 23 years and sold it for 1/3 of the new cost.
On my second Yamaha side/side and can highly recommend them.Lots of Can-Am side by side in our area, but I find them uncomfortable.
Base model Yamaha Viking can be had for 13K.
I would not buy any of the China made units.

I looked at the Honda Pioneer a while back and it is indeed a sweet machine. I'm having trouble justifying the price though. I did consider a less expensive golf cart as well but my land is a bit too steep & rugged.

There are very few places on my 25 acres that I can't get to with my open station MX5800. I have two deck boxes mounted on pallets. One has the shooting range gear and the other contains the tools I use to maintain fences, etc. I pick up the one I want with the forks and take it where it's needed.

If I ever get into trail riding for pleasure, I might spring for that Honda but right now, there's too much to do around the place, which doesn't leave me much free time.

Kubota makes very reliable heavy duty units, my 1100c with hydraulic dump box and ability to haul and tow far more than advertised is invaluable around my homestead.

Kubota does make nice units, gas and diesel, so they might be worth a look. Our UTV is strictly for utility work around the farm. Pulling the manure spreader, pasture vac, hauling stuff, etc. We just traded our Kawasaki 4010 Trans4X4 for a Kubota RTV-X diesel. The 4010 was a good utility vehicle but we really didn't need seating for 6. It rarely has more than 1 in it. Our Kubota is diesel so no more having to haul gas as I have a 58-gallon bulk diesel tank, plus it has more power. The hydraulic dump bed is nice. A top speed of 25 mph means no doors or netting, so it is easier to get in and out. On our 14 acres I rarely go faster than 5 mph.

2008 Kubota RTV 900, hydraulic dump bed is a back saver, only thing it has ever needed was oil and filters. Nothing on my place gets used as much as this does

Neighbor bought a new cabbed one, loaded up like a new expensive truck, $25k.
Not sure I could make myself do that.

We have a fleet of the Kubota SxS's here at the University and my brother is the director over the shop that maintains all these units along with the tractors. When I was looking at a Kubota SxS last year, he talked me out of it saying that he can't keep transmissions in them and they are extremely expensive to replace. It's possible it's just abuse from the people using them but it was enough to scare me off. I have no direct experience with them so my info is nothing more than input from another...

For lower-cost models look at the "Work" and "Mid-Size" models.
For electric (golf-cart type) look at the "Electric Work" models.
Or if money is no object (we should be that lucky!), look at the Full-Size XUVs.

ADDED IN EDIT:
I forgot that Deere also now makes a smaller "GS" Gator in both gas and electric:

I don't know why they don't list them on their main Gator site ......

Never heard of that problem, know my dealer well too so would of heard.....I suspect it was abuse with too many trainee drivers.

I think the regular Pioneer 1000 is a three seater. The 1000-5 is a five seater. The cost difference looks like it's significant. Even the regular one is expensive.

Our Pioneer 700 has been good for us. The oil filter change is a pain but other than that it's not too hard to maintain.

Make sure to take it for a test drive. We hated the Pioneer 500's jerky transmisson but the 700 has a totally different transmission. The 1000 trans is more like the 500 at least in theory, but the details may make the difference.

^This! Is your place a swamp??

If you're not planning on "mudding" then save money and look at the standard Can-am Defender. I wanted an all-season unit so I bought one with the cab; don't care if it is 20 degrees and blowing snow I can still use it in comfort. I've been putting several miles a day on my Defender, doing fencing and setting gopher traps, and other chores. Much easier on me and on the fields to use the Defender rather than one of my tractors, especially when the ground is wet and soft. And I can take it on trail rides - works great for that also. Over 4000 miles on mine now and the drive belt still looks like new. Very dependable unit.

It you'd loketo do trail rides, I'd recommend not getting one with a hydrostatic drive.
