ok, have 3 vehicles all with different applications. they're high mileage (combined 700k miles on the 3)

5k change intervals w/full syn oil, oem filters. always change filter when i do changes. given that all the engines are in good shape, do i need to change the oem filter every time, or every other change given that they consume very little oil between changes?
i ask a lot of my vehicles, & maintain accordingly. your thoughts, thx in advance.

well i agree with the above, maybe why the engines are doing well.
i just got to thinking though since some recomm 10k oil changes w/full syn (which i'll never do), that maybe it would apply to filters, esp if the change is 5k intervals.
just wanted to hear opinions, regards

Why would you dump a quart of dirty oil, into a reservoir of new, clean oil by not changing the filter? You would essentially contaminate the new oil instantly.

IMO, you should ALWAYS change the oil filter when doing the oil change.

I also think that waiting until 5k miles to do oil changes is far too long, unless the miles are all interstate miles. I do mine every 2500 miles. I've done that ever since I was 16 years old, and I've NEVER had an engine problem. (now in my 70's)

duffer: followed your change interval schedule with dyno oil for many years. when changing to full syn (castrol) i bumped it to 5k intervals w/oem filter.
just curious to see if i really need to change oil filter every time as well always using the same oil type, etc. regards

I was a 3000 mile oil change guy for 30+ years. 20+ years ago I bought a Honda and the manual said 10K mile oil changes..... I think "No way", I ran the first one to 5K and did a used oil analysis - no wear metals and the oil was at less than half life... I tried a 10K oil change interval and sent out another used oil sample, very low wear metals and plenty of life left in the oil. I did a few more used oil samples at 10K intervals and they all came back fine. I've been a 10K mile oil change interval ever since.

I retired 8+ years ago and now only put 8K miles a year on each car, so they now get an annual oil change, along with the tractors and UTV.

A used oil analysis is money well spent.

I had a classmate of mine 60 years ago that said changing the oil but not the filter was like taking a bath while wearing your dirty socks.

Anyone else here besides me not trust oem recommended oil change at 10k intervals?
I'm sure I'll get some haters but I bought a Ford truck, no that's not it  this > From new I put full synthetic oil in it with a new filter every 10-15k miles. It idled excessively on job sites, hauled a lot of horses, and generally just got used hard for 160k miles. Friend bought it 8-10 yrs ago and the 04 F250 gasser is still doing ranch duty and pulling classic cars to shows. Miles unknown.

I got 2015 GMC Sierra 2500. Change oil and filter as it says in the manual: every 10k. Used regular oil till last year. Last year put synthetic by mistake...))

I've cut apart many filters and never seen even a speck of dirt or debris. But good quality auto oil filters are pretty cheap so I change them at the recommended intervals. Some of my OPE filter changes are 4 time longer than the OCI's.

I don't go by manufactures time intervals though. Ex: 7500 mile OCI's or 12 months. I'm not dumping 6 quarts of good M1 with 1500 miles on it just because of a calendar change. I've emailed both super majors and neither could give me a satisfactory reason other than to stay in warranty. But I make sure the oil gets good and hot to dry it out regularly.

Magnetic plugs do seem to pick up a little sludge over time.

Do you put on clean socks when you wash your feet?
