Here is an interesting video with insider info on the problem (crankshaft) and why they are shifting production.

Who would want a 6.2 in a Corvette? Raise your hand for a count.✋
The vast majority of C6, C7 and C8 owners apparently do. LS3, LS9, LT1, LT2, LT4, LT5, let's see, did I miss any 6.2L corvette engine variants? :)

I really want an LS3 C6 manual. Probably another decade before I can buy a toy like that though, we'll see.

Here is the test procedure to see if you get an new engine or an oil change. It must be using the knock sensor to pick up issues with the crank bearings.

It is too bad for the ones involved in the recall. My wife's new 2025 Tahoe High Country with the 6.2L is not involved with the recall. Compared to the 5.3L we drove for a test it is night and day for power. It is fun to drive but you do have to watch your speed. It gets up to speed fast, cruise control is my friend.

According to the GM website, my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is involved with the recall. I have not yet received the recall notice. I wonder how long that will take?

It took over a year to receive the notice for the defective grille recall. The replacement part has been on backorder for 4 months now.

I usually trade in my vehicles every 3 or 4 years. I may wind up doing so before either recall is fixed.

I think that’s one of three different tests used, depending on your serial number. Some others get a simple check for a code:

I wouldn’t want to have mine judged by either method.

General Motors Facing New Class-Action Lawsuit Over 6.2-Liter V8 Issues

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The lawsuit, featuring plaintiffs from Washington and California, details familiar issues with the L87 engine, specifically in vehicles manufactured for model years 2021–2024. As outlined in that April recall, the engines may feature sediment on the connecting rods or in the oil galleries for the crankshaft, which can lead to rod-bearing damage. GM has also acknowledged some engines may feature a crankshaft that is out of production spec. Any of these issues can result in a catastrophic engine failure.

It sounds like the new lawsuit is from a firm that specializes in tort lawsuits. I'm sure more will creep out of the woodwork.

OuThis engine design has to be 20 years old now. Why are engine flushes not part of the fix if it is debris?

The only thing a higher viscosity oil does is provide greater shear resistance between bearing surfaces. It seems to me there are structural issues that thicker oil is trying to fix.

This should never happen in an engine design as old as this one is...
Being a retired mech engineer, at one time I was able to do both bearing journal and roller bearing, tilting pad etc. calculations. You get the proper viscosity, bearing does not ever wear, as there is no contact. Tilting pad bearings have lasted plus 100 years. Next thing to consider is material fatigue under point cycling loading.
A lot of times you can just wing it or use simple calculations, but wtf, if the design is for a costly massed produced item, critical stuff like aircraft, rocket, prime mover, nuclear, etc., you better know your ****, or get help with the design.
A company deserves the consequences of not controlling the design, testing and QC processes.

Sure is good to have a pair of Ford 32 valve motors that luckily happen to be sorted out as well as a Nissan 4V V8 that runs like a clock as the V8s in our little fleet.

But, all it takes is one parts supplier to cause problems, like in this case.

Thats good to hear. But even with 40 weight oil on my truck, I would be waiting for the ticking time bomb to eventually seize a main or rod bearing still.

Keep in mind, there is just a 3% failure rate.

This is what AI says:

The failure rate for 6.2L engines in 2025 GMC and other GM vehicles (including Chevy) is estimated to be around 3% due to a manufacturing defect affecting the connecting rod and/or crankshaft. This defect can lead to catastrophic engine failure. A recall of nearly 600,000 vehicles was issued due to this issue.

Elaboration:
  • Recall and Defect:
GM has recalled a significant number of vehicles (around 600,000) equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine due to a manufacturing defect. This defect potentially causes engine failure, particularly involving the connecting rod and/or crankshaft.

  • Estimated Failure Rate:
While the exact failure rate is difficult to pinpoint, it's estimated that around 3% of the recalled vehicles are likely to have the defect.

  • NHTSA Investigation:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation after receiving numerous complaints, including over 28,000 potentially related to the issue.

  • Impact and Lawsuits:
The engine failure issue has led to a significant number of complaints, multiple investigations, and even lawsuits filed against GM.

  • Recall Scope:
The recall includes various models like the Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and others from model years 2019-2024.

Yeah, its only proven to fail up to 3% of the affected engines SO FAR. But GM should know what batches of crankshafts coming out of Mexico had these machining defects. Frankly, any engine that they bothered to include in the recall is suspect; if GM isn't confident in them than I wouldn't be either.

I just received the safety recall notice on the 6.2L engine from GM. Although it is dated May, 2025, I didn't receive it until the end of June. I heard about the recall on TV and have been following this thread, but this is the first official notification I've received from GM.

I happened to be at the dealer yesterday for another issue and asked about this recall. They told me they are in a holding pattern at this point with no engines, oil, or fill plug in stock. All are backordered for the foreseeable future and likely won't be available until sometime next year.

The warranty on my vehicle expired 2 months ago but the good news is, the dealer said I will be covered by the recall should a problem occur. I was told to expect an email or phone call when parts become available.

I'm considering replacing the oil & filter now as a precaution, but I'm not sure if the GM recommended oil is available in stores. Does anyone know if it's just synthetic 5W 40 or some special blend specific to GM?
