It sounds like the new lawsuit is from a firm that specializes in tort lawsuits. I'm sure more will creep out of the woodwork.

OuThis engine design has to be 20 years old now. Why are engine flushes not part of the fix if it is debris?

The only thing a higher viscosity oil does is provide greater shear resistance between bearing surfaces. It seems to me there are structural issues that thicker oil is trying to fix.

This should never happen in an engine design as old as this one is...
Being a retired mech engineer, at one time I was able to do both bearing journal and roller bearing, tilting pad etc. calculations. You get the proper viscosity, bearing does not ever wear, as there is no contact. Tilting pad bearings have lasted plus 100 years. Next thing to consider is material fatigue under point cycling loading.
A lot of times you can just wing it or use simple calculations, but wtf, if the design is for a costly massed produced item, critical stuff like aircraft, rocket, prime mover, nuclear, etc., you better know your ****, or get help with the design.
A company deserves the consequences of not controlling the design, testing and QC processes.

Sure is good to have a pair of Ford 32 valve motors that luckily happen to be sorted out as well as a Nissan 4V V8 that runs like a clock as the V8s in our little fleet.

But, all it takes is one parts supplier to cause problems, like in this case.

Thats good to hear. But even with 40 weight oil on my truck, I would be waiting for the ticking time bomb to eventually seize a main or rod bearing still.

Keep in mind, there is just a 3% failure rate.

The failure rate for 6.2L engines in 2025 GMC and other GM vehicles (including Chevy) is estimated to be around 3% due to a manufacturing defect affecting the connecting rod and/or crankshaft. This defect can lead to catastrophic engine failure. A recall of nearly 600,000 vehicles was issued due to this issue.

Elaboration:
  • Recall and Defect:
GM has recalled a significant number of vehicles (around 600,000) equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine due to a manufacturing defect. This defect potentially causes engine failure, particularly involving the connecting rod and/or crankshaft.

  • Estimated Failure Rate:
While the exact failure rate is difficult to pinpoint, it's estimated that around 3% of the recalled vehicles are likely to have the defect.

  • NHTSA Investigation:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation after receiving numerous complaints, including over 28,000 potentially related to the issue.

  • Impact and Lawsuits:
The engine failure issue has led to a significant number of complaints, multiple investigations, and even lawsuits filed against GM.

  • Recall Scope:
The recall includes various models like the Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and others from model years 2019-2024.

Yeah, its only proven to fail up to 3% of the affected engines SO FAR. But GM should know what batches of crankshafts coming out of Mexico had these machining defects. Frankly, any engine that they bothered to include in the recall is suspect; if GM isn't confident in them than I wouldn't be either.
