The JD 870/970/1070 models also have a spin-on throwaway cannister style transmission/hydraulic filter in series on the suction side.
Ours has that too. And of course I'll change it too.

Like "qualsite" says, the screen is commonly found to be covered with crud and/or smashed. Straighten it out and reuse. The screen usually fits loosely over a couple of projections. It is not a fluid-tight fit at all. You can make your own with 200 mesh stainless steel hardware cloth from Ace hardware, or even sew on patches with stainless steel thread.
Seems odd that it's that fine of a mesh and yet not fluid-tight.

I realized I better have a filter-replacement plan in place before I drain the system. I don't see this stuff at Ace. But @rScotty does this look like the right stuff ?

You shouldn't have to replace the screen. It can be cleaned.

People talk about it maybe being crushed - somehow.
Yeah, maybe... If it's plugged BAD, it may suck in on itself, but you should be able to re-form it. You'll just need to open 'er up and find out.

So just wanted to have the correct material on hand to fab a new one, as people say you can do.

Changed oil & filter. Sump screen was pretty clean, probably not the problem. Oil was much darker-colored than new, but not milky at all. Too soon to tell if improvement, but seems doubtful. Have heard of adjusting pump pressure, but owner's manual says nothing about it.
