A friend who is retired asked me my thoughts on the Ford Maverick as he would like a not so big truck for fishing but still room for 4 adults…

I said let me post on the Tractor site as I don’t know much about new vehicles…

The hybrid looks interesting but in Canada they aren't rated for towing anything.

I suggest he look at the GMC Sierra 1500 with the DuraMax 3.0 diesel. I looked at the Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado, and of course all the 1500's and F150's.

I settled on the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. My reasons for choosing this truck included:
1. Excellent fuel mileage. I get around 27-30mpg
2. Highest towing capacity of a 1/2 ton. (13,200lbs)
3. Cost for a diesel engine was $1000 LESS than a gas engine.
4. My dealer gave $5500 off the MSRP and there was a $2750 factory rebate
5. More interior room than the small and mid-size trucks.

So far, I am very happy with it. I have about 3500 miles on it so far. One thing to note is that a friend recently bought a Sierra 1500 SLT with a gas engine, and the dealer gave $11,000 off the MSRP. This was a different dealer than where I bought mine.

Also, my total cost including almost 10% sales tax was around $70,000. My friend got his for a total cost of about $55,000

I'd suggest he and his 4 friends go test drive one to see how they all fit in it.

But what does it have for a transmission? If it's the same as what's behind their gas engines it's only good for 130k miles of light duty work.

Getting back to the Ford Maverick, the direct competition is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The Maverick is made in Mexico and the Santa Cruz is made in Montgomery Alabama. They each are unique and have their pluses depending what your priorities are. There are many head to head comparisons online:

He likes the size with 4 door cab and main concern is reliability as the plan is his last vehicle purchase…

It does seem among those I know with expensive newer full size trucks that drive a lot transmissions are expensive issues.

I'd be more interested in the gas version than buying the electric version because those batteries could be expensive to replace if even available 10 or so years from now.

I asked my Ford dealer if he could get the low price version Ford advertises. He said Ford never seems to give them any allotment of those...only the higher priced ones.

It was the same way when they allowed people to order them. Every year when they started taking orders, the quota for the lower end Mavericks were filled within weeks. Someday an entrepeneur will realize that people really don't want to spend stupid amounts on features they don't need. Henry Ford is rolling in his grave.

Tell him to at least look at the Tacoma Hybrid. $46k MSRP.

From everything I've read the Maverick has a pretty good reputation. Quite reliable and very good on fuel. Not something I would ever buy (just a car missing a trunk lid far as I'm concerned) but for someone who could use its features, sounds like a good vehicle.

I think that is the 3.0 Diesel engine used in Tahoe and Sierra and it has chain drives in the back of the engine, where at least the first chain is accessible only by separating the engine/transmission.

That alone is enough for me to stay away from it, but it may not be an issue at all for someone who trades in for a new truck every 2 - 3 years...

So, county i live in, public works is going to Maverick, Awd, for meter readers, inspectors, PSAs, property appraiser, ect. My company has a couple.

So, for commuting, with the ability to carry some tools, plants, ect; they are good. If looking at working towards max Payload, or regularly towing more than 3500#, I'd look at Canyon/Ranger/Frontier. Within the limits, the Maverick is a very nice cross between a mid sized car based SUV (think explorer/highlander), and a truck.

They aren't very sporty, but they will merge on the interstate at half throttle without an issue.

Only 2 months and 5,000 miles in with the hybrid Maverick and I have nothing but compliments.
My son likes to use it to run back and forth to school. Great gas milage and the small bed is useful. My daughter takes it to haul one or two bails of hay plus feed to care for her cattle.
Milage is over 31 MPG when lead foot drives it, kids get around 35.

I have a F150 and F250 if I need the work of a full size truck. I find myself using the Maverick for almost everything but pulling my tractor.

.. it seems like it would be good at everything it's namesake did, plus going to the dump, hauling fuel, or throwing a wet dog in the back.
Also stuff like pool chemicals, paint, ect. Stuff you really would prefer to not put in your carpeted SUV/car.

Also, they can and do pull trailers. We all get way to focused on 7000# towing and such, but you can do a lot with a 900# landscape trailer, and 2600# capacity. Think trips to the dump, pallet of mulch, even just taking a full sized grill to the lake/camp.

Also, although i have absolutely throw a deer in the back of a Highlander, getting the blood out of the carpet sucks.

Some/all can be ordered with 4000# towing numbers, but being primarily FWD, with rear assist, you wouldn't want much tongue weight.
