So should SMV placards be removed from tractors on trailers? I usually leave mine on but back the tractor onto the trailer. Just wondering. Jon

Legally, yes...but only if it is visible to other drivers. But in reality, if it is visible, you're likely to get away with it unless you're in an at fault bad accident.

Throw a rag over it.

My SMV's are easily removable. The one the B26TLB has been removed permanently. It was in the way of getting on and off of the backhoe position. Both tractors are loaded backwards on the trailers and the truck has a cap on it, so the SMV sign is hard to see. Jon

With my 84 F150, it would have still been a slow moving vehicle, and so appropos to leave it on.

I always leave mine on when trailering, no matter which way I face the tractor. My truck might be moving slowly, approaching or accellerating away from a stop. I don't think the SMV means "this vehicle can never move quickly".

That said, Deere always specifies that tractors be towed in a direction that prevents the hood from flying up if the latch fails, which is backwards for the present machine.

The backhoe for my machine came with a SMV sign mounted to the mast (presumably because the one on the tractor would have to be removed to mount the hoe). The one on the BH mast just has a "slip-on" bracket for tooless removal/replacement to get it out of the way when working, but to replace when needed for roading.

Here's a reversal on the towing question: What do you folks with backhoes do, for towing a utility trailer while the backhoe is mounted? I have a few projects for which I'm contemplating buying a backhoe, which would be added to my 3033R.

Trouble is, I'll be moving dirt from one place to another, and my best tool for that job is my 2-ton 4x8 foot dump wagon. I usually use my tractor to tow and power the dump wagon, but with the hoe installed, I'm thinking that will be difficult or impossible.
