Why can't AI teach?

I've read that teaching is one occupation that AI can most easily replace.

There is also the idea that we are educating kids for a world that existed decades ago. Not the world the will actually live in. They are asked to memorize facts and figures... Why?

They get basically the same education we had 30 years ago, but their needs will be nothing like ours.

Wild world they are about to live in.
Presenting information is not teaching.
If info were enough, the internet would have made us all "smart". It hasn't!

Teaching is 90% inspiration. Look back on your own education for examples. They are the only ones that count!

I guess we will see if we have more or less teachers in 10 years.

I have my money on less.

I'm not saying it will be "better".... I mean our system has been in decline since the 1970s, and we have not remedied it... So I'm not convinced we care about "quality" of education

I'm saying, for better or worse... The train is coming.

As a retired teacher I would advise him to major in what he wants to teach and then get the certificate later.

The education courses are the most useless. Teachers are better with more actual subject matter knowledge.

Alternatively, get into the trades and become more successful. My local welder neighbor flies in with his float plane.

I just sold a second lake home to a local well driller.

If I had a kid I'd send them to sparky or HVAC school—definitely not diesel or auto tech.

Sure. My advice was targeted at what the kid already wants to do.

I think we need to value skilled trades equally with college education. We shouldn't be pushing the wrong pegs into the wrong holes either way. If a kid wants to teach, make him an effective teacher. If the kid wants to weld, make him an effective welder. Don't try to make the welder a teacher or the teacher a welder.

Wanting to be something, and that something actually being a viable career, are two different things.

My son wants to play video games.

ROI on that is poor

Unless he wants to teach welding... 😎

I became an electrician many years ago because it was a job that could not be outsourced. Now i also see it as a job that cant be done by AI.

And as for the topic, i dont see AI as “becoming dangerous”….it starts out dangerous.

But..........has the welding teacher done much/any welding??...kinda like the MBA that never had a lemon stand.🤔

I agree they should be doing something they want to do, but also think their natural abilities play a huge part. Not everyone is cut out to be a (pick your profession), sure you can teach them but they may never be very good at it. Kids should learn what they're naturally good at (probably multiple things) and choose a career that fits.

I could probably teach a Beagle to retrieve ducks, but they'll never be as good at it as a Lab and they probably won't enjoy it. Same goes for humans.
