How could Artificial Intelligence become dangerous?

Alternatively, get into the trades and become more successful. My local welder neighbor flies in with his float plane.

I just sold a second lake home to a local well driller.

If I had a kid I'd send them to sparky or HVAC school—definitely not diesel or auto tech.
And most electricians and HVAC get their trade school tuition paid for.

I think AI is going to cause a lot of people to stop thinking critically, or thinking for themselves. We already have enough people with skulls full of mush.

But like Clover Knoll said, “the (AI) train is coming”.

My son is pursuing a career as a professional pilot, and I HIGHLY doubt he will see that career through to actual retirement. Not at the pace AI advances. I've been working to convince him that early retirement like his pop, is something worthy of pursuing. He may only have 10 years to accumulate personal wealth, so he better take advantage
Are you saying that airliners will be flown autonomously (i.e., NO pilots, or only one pilot on board) in the future? If so, what would be your prediction on how soon that might happen? Even if theoretically possible, how likely do you believe it is that such a situation will be accepted by the public?

Autonomous flight is already possible.

There are a couple of drawbacks, though.

1) loss of power to AI and it crashes. It's not like a car that you could just stop and get out of.

2) human acceptance. Some people are OK with autonomous cars. Few are keen on the idea of no pilot.

3) as you suggested, they'd still need Captain Justin Case. That removes some of the advantage. Still have to pay for at least 1 pilot and you cannot simply remove the manual controls and gauges.

For most commercial use, it's about cost saving. Maybe they try it for cargo flights? It all comes down to whether the cost reduction is worth the loss of ticket sales. You may see something closer to the Jetsons where rich people have automation of their person planes. That way, only those willing to take the risk actually buy the tech.

I agree 100% with all you say, but, if I read his post correctly, it sounds like a guy who has been flying airliners for his entire career told his Son that they won't need airline pilots in 10 years. Maybe I misunderstood what he said, but that's what it looks like and I would put a lot of stock in his opinion.

Me too. I started out just letting you know it's already possible. Militaries already have it.

I agree they should be doing something they want to do, but also think their natural abilities play a huge part. Not everyone is cut out to be a (pick your profession), sure you can teach them but they may never be very good at it. Kids should learn what they're naturally good at (probably multiple things) and choose a career that fits.

I could probably teach a Beagle to retrieve ducks, but they'll never be as good at it as a Lab and they probably won't enjoy it. Same goes for humans.
AI is actually better at reading mammograms than a doctor.

Dont they have a phone app yet for mammograms……all you pervs out there 😎

Old tech ... I remember the x-ray glasses advertised in the back of comic books ... (Right next to the one-man submarines) LOL

Single pilot flight decks are coming. Bar none. That creates 50% unemployment in that field.

Aircraft already have backup power... Because there are no manual flight controls, they are fly by wire mainly.

A pilot comes at a huge cost. I wasn't the highest paid, but I earned $30k per month. Per MONTH. And I had a pilot next to me earning $15k per month.

Also, humans make errors. Most accidents are human error. So, statistically travel could be safer. The new generation prefers computers and machines to people already, they won't be difficult to convince.

I'm just saying, at the rate AI advances. Doubling it's capabilities every 5.9 months (and that is before AGI)... I think people are in denial if they think the career landscape doesn't change drastically in 10 years.

I want my kids to be aware and eyes wide open. My son's GF wants to study computer sciences... She will probably be unemployed. Tech companies are already laying off tens of thousands of workers, because their creations have made them obsolete.

People see AI as a chatbot... It's not, and it's not being developed to be. Trillions of dollars flow into it, not to answer our stupid questions. They expect it to INVENT NEW TECHNOLOGIES by 2026. Not HELP US develop new technologies. I'm saying, it will invent it on its own.

I'm glad I'm retired. I'm not sure I want to race AI to the finish line of my career. I took an early exit and I'm glad.
