How could Artificial Intelligence become dangerous?

I view AI the way that I do Wikipedia...
I skip right over it. Especially when it comes to medical questions I want to know the source.
Similar. I would use it for a quick, rough estimate of info...what's the population of XYZ? Also, calculations that are outside of my knowledge base...what's the melting point of magnesium?

Never ask about anything that could be based on anyone's opinion.

There are things AI could do well, but it needs to be contained. Example: medical AI has been good at reading images and locating things doctors might miss. If that function is locked into a device that only has access to images and no identity info and no access outside its own database, that could work.

Tech peeps want everything interconnected and apparently have never watched a sci-fi movie or read a novel.

Bladerunner 2049.

I can see interactions in the medical field and elder care.

Not all is bad.
Some people constantly find the need to fear monger to get attention.
Especially the quivering cowardly types.

My humble opinion is, that only software that can add and change it’s own lines of code, is truly AI, and not simply a sophisticated computer program.
I think the majority of people, and companies (trying to boost visibility) are calling just about every computer program, artificial intelligence.
To me, the hard distinction is the program having code, and authorization, instructing it to change it’s own code.
A sophisticated program looking up data, and reporting it, is just a sophisticated program looking up data. It’s not AI, if it’s compiled and requires human updates.

We used to call coders, programmers, now they’re all called software engineers. They’re still writing/maintaining programs that access and modify databases. I use very few programs that I personally would consider true artificial intelligence

Or work. The idea is becoming that some job sectors will see 30-40% unemployment in 5 years or less. This could cause a major shift in the trajectory of humanity. I don't think a lot of people realize how unnecessary they are about to become
As long as my employer's tenants keep breaking things for the next 20 months, I'm good.

Gotta wonder what the future holds for the youngsters.

Quite the opposite! Were you? At the time, a couple of years prior to Y2K, computer 'help desk' was a minor part of my responsibilities. So I got asked a lot what would happen. I had read everything relevant, and always replied nothing major will happen. Expect a few glitches such as transit schedules, and maybe invoice due dates showing mistaken data, minor inconveniences, but nothing affecting very many people. And that turned out to be the case. Certainly not the End Of Civilization that some ignorant frightened people believed - loudly.

Being well-informed is preferable to Being Very Afraid of the unknown.

I actually made some money on Y2K. A friend was buying pallet loads of surplussed non-conforming computer gear from major corporations. I got from him dozens of tape backup drives (not calendar-sensitive) and resold them on Ebay. That helped recover part of the substantial sum I had paid to Sis to buy out her half of this inherited orchard. That's my Y2K story! Life is good.
My employer had about 350 or so 286 PCs and a system that would have stopped functioning at Y2K. So I purchase little clock cards that supported 4 digit year that installed in an open slot on each PC and that resolved that. Had we not done that, we'd have been dead in the water. To prove it, we left a couple PCs unaltered. They were very confused the next few days. ;)

Asaac Asimov envisioned a future for AI where the overriding top law was that a robot cannot harm a person.

In reality, someone quickly realized, "Hey, this would be a great tool for killing people!"

But I'm sure we'll be fine.
I was going to mention Asimov but you beat me to it.

I was working in tech support at Gateway during Y2K. It was mostly a nothing-burger. We had staffed up and it was actually pretty slow.

I'm surprised y'all didn't just upgrade operating systems.
